Frequently Asked Questions
Hi, and Welcome to the Regiments General discussion group!

Regiments is a tactical Cold War RTS, currently developed by a one-man studio Bird's Eye Games and published by the MicroProse.

---- Frequently Asked Questions:

What is it?
Tactical RTS set in 1989 Germany, depicting Cold War going Hot between the NATO and Warsaw Pact. If the Cold War tensions erupted into war without immediately going nuclear, it would have been up to the armored and mechanized divisions of both sides to decide the outcome of the titanic struggle. Hundred of thousands of men, crewing state of art tanks, and fighting vehicles would fight over the pastoral open plains and tight confines of urban areas across the entirety of Inner German Border.

Regiments strives to capture the essence of those massive, furious, and vehicle-centric battles. The game aims for a balance between playability and realism, in the same general spirit as the well-known Wargame series. It's not a hardcore wargame/milsim.

Content?
A story of Cold War gone Hot, told over 4 multi-day Operations and 3 smaller Interludes.
3 Skirmish Modes: Meeting Engagement, Attack, Mobile Defense - playable on 20 Maps.
Five nations: USSR, East Germany, West Germany, US and Belgium. An average of 3-5 Regiments and 10-20 Task Forces per nation.
UK forces will be present as Task Forces initially, to be added fully later in a DLC.

Release platforms?
Steam for PC/Windows. More platforms may be supported later.

Modding/Map editing?
Map editing is highly unlikely to appear. Scenario editing & limited modding support may appear at some point later.
OTOH, a lot of Unity + Mono backend games end up being modded even without having official modding support if somebody is driven enough to learn some complex tools.

Team size?
Bird's Eye Games is just me, Soundwolf776.
MicroProse team provides the 3d models, helps with the map design, UI elements, and marketing.
Unity community is also of great help.

DLC?
Post-release support is planned with more nations, operations, and maps.

Multiplayer?
Not planned during the Regiments lifetime - neither PvP, nor Coop.
The plan is to get the single-player aspects right, then consider MP for the game's second iteration, if that comes to pass.

---- Some common questions regarding the gameplay:

Platoons?
Platoons of 2-4 vehicles/squads are the basic controllable elements in Regiments - there are no plans to allow controlling individual units. Regiments focuses on big-picture decisions and micro-less gameplay.

Mech. infantry system?
Mech. infantry being 'married' to their transports will stay through the Regiments lifetime: we're intentionally sacrificing some fidelity to avoid microcontrol busywork.
Heliborne and truck-mounted infantry are planned to appear later and will be controlled independently of their transports.

Paratroopers?
Small-scale tactical paradrops were not planned in 1989 Germany. The amount of airpower and anti-air systems on both sides made anything smaller than a divisional-scale paradrop unlikely.

Units 'phasing' through props?
Currently, the collisions are not calculated - it's a legacy problem from long ago that's almost impossible to fix correctly by now without major rewrite. On the other hand, we plan to address it partially at some point, to ease up the most apparent cases.
