IF during the portal scene you blow up the enemies all before "you should" (meaning maybe some arbitrary measure), the second wave of enemies never come and the portal does not go away. So when you do that you are forced to leave at least one enemy of the first wave alive until the second wave shows up, otherwise, you are stuck.
