Fishing in 42
I've been fishing in build 42. I'm only at fishing level 2. (Have not found a book for fishing lvl3-4 so it's very slow progress). I've probably caught around 80 or so things so far. That's about
8 or so junk items (rag, seaweed, broken net)
2 tiny bait fish
69 small fish
1 medium fish
I'm fishing from the ripples in the water. I start in the afternoon but stay until the end of evening twilight. I try to fish from deeper into the pond when possible (further off the shore). Yet so far I've only caught 1 medium fish. I cut it up and used the filet as bait and only caught little fish with it.

So how to catch medium and bigger fish?
Am I doing something wrong?
Is it just very rare?
Is my fishing skill simply too low?

It's mostly your fishing level. Your chance for med/big fish increases with each level. You can also increase your chances by casting far away from the shore. Which is not possible in the smaller streams and ponds. Which pond are you fishing at?

It also seems like you had some pretty bad RNG. I assume 69 small fish was starting from level 0? I would have expected a few more medium fish. Trash chance also decreases with your fishing level.
I started at level 0 yes, after reading a fishing skill book. So the first few levels were rather quick. I've been casting far from the shore ever since I hit level 1. The pond I'm fishing at is in Rosewood. X 8172 Y 12186.
That spot seems fine for fishing... Have you tried fishing using maggots for bait? That is what I always do and my medium fish catches are way better than what you indicate even when I start at fishing level 0.

Maggots are super simple to harvest too, just clear the zed bodies in your local area every so often. I usually get 100 maggots in early game just knowing that I will need them for when the power goes out and I start fishing.

Yeah that pond seems big enough. The bait shouldn't matter for fish size, it only effects the species of fish that you catch.

When you say 69 small fish are you actually looking at the small/medium/big label for the item name? Some (not most) of the level 0-1 fish species can be a Medium fish but are still too small for slicing so you can't make filets from them.
