Anyone have idea how to open original SPAZ images in case I want to edit them for modding?

There is a tip: Push (CONTROL + NUM KEYS) to construct ships from different hangars I cannot find out what it does. Can you somehow transfer a design between hangars?

I'm currently trying to reach my first objective beyond the Titan Gates - so I have a hangar that can accommodate one Huge class ship, but after about 10-20 hours random play, trying different things, occasionally respecing a skillset to try something high-end, I'm still far from getting my own huge ship. This is fine, I like the slow progression to end-game tech in SPAZ.
