From Steam Support, excuse the horrible grammar. XD


Hello, me and many others are having issues on Steam getting games to launch. The games stay at Updating Executable and don't launch.

This is an issue with the games Aliens Vs Predator 2010 and Aliens Colonial Marians.

This is a Steam DRM issue. Please fix this.

Thank you for contacting Steam Support and reporting this to us. I'm sorry to hear you're having trouble with your device.

Please try retesting the issue with the games while your Deck is plugged into your original power supply unit (PSU/charger).

To ensure the PSU has power and a good connection, please also try the following:
Unplug and re-plug your PSU from the Steam Deck; wiggle the plug a little to ensure it's plugged in all the way
Try plugging the PSU into a different power outlet if plugging in doesn't help
Try an alternate USB-C PSU if you have one available

Let us know if you still see the same issue with the games, or not.

The device is fine. Game like Fear 3, Aliens Colonial Marines and AVP 2010 are no longer launching on all platforms. Windows 10, 11 or Steam OS. This is a steam issue because these games worked fine a few months ago. The games get stuck at updating executable and never run.

No error for those games. They don't get passed Updating Executable. They used to all work great before November. Now they don't launch.

I've tried reinstalling Windows/Steam OS, verifying, launch commands, no luck. Seems to be lots of people in the Steam Discussions all having the same issues.

I read on Gethub that it might be a Steam DRM issue.

I recommend testing these games. Download them try to launch. They all get stuck at updating Executable and never launch. Steam just resets to the play button again. All these games worked on older installs I had a few days ago. When I went to redownload them they all have this issue, the three games I mentioned.

All running on new versions of Windows and Steam OS. I've Tried fresh install of Windows 11/10, stable versions of Steam OS, Beta, Preview.

Every version of Proton have the same issues, in all 3 of these games. Apparently if you search Steam stuck on Updating Executable it's happening to a lot of games recently.

Like I said before. These games all worked on Windows 10/11 and Steam OS a few days ago. Once I preformed a clean install on all of these games they get stuck at Updating Executable. The games seem to also fail to install prerequisites.

We appreciate your patience while we were reviewing all the information you have provided.

On your windows machine, check the security software you are using (Windows Defender/Norton/AVG/Avast/McAfee) to see if any game files are being quarantined as possible viruses or suspicious files.

Some Security software can be over protective and a change in the .exe or an associated .dll can cause it to block a download or install of a changed file or a new file.

Verifying game file integrity through Steam only checks to make sure all of the files are on your PC- and one sitting in an anti-virus quarantine folder is often counted as "existing" by Steam, even though the security software will prevent it from being accessed.

It's not a AV issue. I use Windows Defender, this problem happens on Windows 10/11 and Steam OS. This is most likely a DRM issue on Steam Side.

Check Steam discussions everyone who plays these games are having the same issue. The EXE isn't being updated correctly. These games get stuck on Updating EXE and never launch.

As much as we would love to assist, Steam support doesn't have specific troubleshooting for the games in question since this games are not developed by Valve.

If you've already done all the recommended steps, you may want to try some steps provided by other users on Steam Discussion for the game.

If the issue persists, we would recommend to please reach out with the game support as they have proper tools and insights about the issue.

I thought Valve were supposed to be the good guys. It's sad to know I don't own any of my games and some that I love are broken because of Steam DRM.

No fixes. This is a recent problem on Steams end. It's pathetic that versions of games we paid money get this type of treatment.

I'm incredibly disappointed. I invested my time and money into this company and I feel I got shafted.
