I need some help. Game won't launch
So I've had this game in my library for a good while now and wanted to play it again. Maybe get the full way through the alien campaign and the pred campaign. Problem is that any time I launch the game I get a message saying "Completing instalation%". It will eventually instead say it's launching then tell me the who steam service error and trying to install just freezes up steam.

I'm ASSUMING that the problem is steam is trying to install software it no-longer has access to and so is incapable. Any ideas on how to fix this?

Oh and last time I played the game was both on a different computer and back in 2015.

I'm not totally sure what you're describing especially on the last paragraph about steam no-longer having access. Did you copy the game files from an old hard drive?

There are two answers I always give because they solve most of the problems.

Verify cache integrity: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=2037-QEUH-3335

After you verify if the game still says it needs to finish installing then you probably need to temporarily disabled your antivirus. Steam installs some files when the game is launched for the first time and antivirus software can block Steam. Disable your antivirus until steam finishes the install and it should work after that.

If you're still having issues fully reinstalling the game often works too. Otherwise let me know if it these 3 things don't work and I'll try to help or someone else can

Sorry for that gibberish bit I'll try to explain it better later. So to get on to explaining my situation better.

This is a fresh install. I have uninstalled and re-installed the game three/four times and I've not transferred the files. I couldn't do such even if I wanted to as the old computer hard drive died. I have now verified integrity of game files twice. This time included. Finally turns out my anti-virus was not launching on computer startup and I was unprotected. I'm fixing that the second I'm done typing this. So thanks for making me look into that.

To explain what I was on about earlier. I was trying to say that steam was unable to do it's first time startup due to not having access to the files required to do such for some reason unknown to me. This may be what's going on but I know jack and ♥♥♥♥ about software so dunno.

Here are some pictures showing what's going on.

Attempted launch
http://prntscr.com/qvd7kc%20

Directly after launch
http://prntscr.com/qvd7tn%20

Result
http://prntscr.com/qvd87u

I'm gonna try hitting install and waiting it out although my hope is low. I'll edit to say the result.

EDIT: No it just froze. Again.

Haven't been home to use a computer to research the stuff you posted. Busy moving a business to a new location

Doing some initial sleuthing brought up some likely answers related directly to the error Steam is reporting about admin privileges. This website succinctly complies what I've found in abundance so far. I would start with Solution 3 then Solution 1.

https://appuals.com/how-to-fix-steam-service-errors-when-installing-steam-service/

In general it appears that your computer believes the current User or Steam does not have admin privileges to do what they need to do. It's an annoying common issue with Windows OS but easily overcome by running programs as an administrator. (right click the program and select Run As Administrator).

It would be a tad strange if AvP is the only game with this error if other games you've installed after AvP work without the error.

In case the website I linked above doesn't work, bring up a Command Prompt in Admin mode. Run this command but change the directory to wherever your Steam directory is:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\bin\SteamService.exe" /repair

If that doesn't work try running Steam as an administrator directly by Right Clicking the Steam.exe icon, select Properties, and enable 'Run this program as an administrator' found in the Compatibility tab.

So I had tried to launch the game as admin in the past after my own searching. the game would just never launch. I didn't think to actually launch steam in admin though. This worked perfectly. Thanks man you were a great help. Also I had installed games after it so it was literally just AvP. duno why.

Hi , I am still stuck but I don't know if my problem is the same as the described in this tread. So I just purchased AVP and installed it in Disc C but when I click on Play It says Launching (Updating executable) and after about 1 minute nothing happens and the PLAY button is back. I have tried running Steam as admin, repairing steam, enabling the automatic startup, uninstalling the game and doing a fresh install. I have verified the cache, I have cleared the cache, and I have tried changing the compatibility to Windows XP but nothing works. I don't know what else to try. Any help?

I downloaded BattleFront and it runs with no problem. This is the first time I ever have this issue with a steam game.

From what I can understand some sort of windows update messed up the .exe's compabability (guessing here cause recently a windows update happened and we're all getting issues)

That or something is wrong with the .exe entirely and it's not booting and steam doesn't have a good copy so we can't get a updated .exe cause it's on the updated version allready

I've tried everything and now I'm telling as I learn at this point

Hey I solved my problem by replacing the exes. There is a other post on this same topic where the guy provided the exes from a Google drive. Just download them and paste them on your folder replacing the corrupted ones.

Now that doesn't fix the issue of the game crashing when trying to play multiplayer but fixes the game not launching issue. Hope it helps.

Those exes work for a while in Singleplayer, but at Mission 3 the Game keeps crashing every time.

Theres a fix - https://files-gf.wiretarget.com/files/ap/sr-avpu46.7z
Just copy AVP.exe and AvP_DX11.exe into the game folder.
Worked for me.

It works temporarily but then it crashed again. I know the fix is just repair the exes with the recent update on the game validating the data, then run Steam as admin, and don't open the game from the icons or the Play button. But go to the folder and pick on AvP (X9)
