Wow it's in my library already and I don't ever remember buying it, can't believe I missed this!
I wouldn't really call Guardians of Orion a sequel. Other than in the barest of technically correct parameters. It is, in fact, the next game in the series, but that's about it. There's a few new abilities to play with in a somehow more repetitive gameplay loop. Barebones rpg mechanics that feel like a placeholder someone cooked up in place of the actual mechanics that may have been intended to go there. And some slight upgrades to the graphics.

So, really, in every way that counts, that being expanding upon and refining the formula, we still need a sequel to Prelude.
There was a real sequel in development but strangely the videos showing a tiny bit of it are now delisted

Orion 3 (Maybe?)
Sadly it probably won't ever happen, last I saw David Prassel is working at Midnight Society on Dr. Disrespect's NFT scam game, and the only other thing David does is occasionally post "bullshot" game concept renders on his Artstation. As far as I can tell, "DANKIE" and "Spiral Game Studios" are long gone. I even tried emailing David a year or two back and got an automated message that his DANKIE and Spiral email addresses no longer exist.

It sucks because Orion: Prelude is such a fun game, I just wish it was more stable (the Plains map crashes every time unless you set world textures to low, and then it looks like crap). I would've much rather seen a UE4 upgrade, maybe throw in a few new guns and maps, but the core foundation of the game is perfectly fine as is.

Instead we got Guardians of Orion, a game that is worse in every single way compared to Prelude. Instead of building on what made the previous game so good, David wanted to chase the latest trends (Destiny/looter RPGs). The game doesn't even have vehicles or a way to change weapons/loadout mid-match, and the only mode it has is a boring "defend the harvester" that grows old fast.

It's baffling how rare dinosaurs are in gaming these days, and when you do see them it's usually a horror game. Is it that much to ask for another co-op dino horde shooter?
