As a puzzle lover I was excited for this one and gave it the ol' college try! Unfortunately the puzzles were somewhat repetitive and tedious, making sticking around for the interesting story not worth it. More intuitive puzzles with less back and forth would've been appreciated. I'm sad to say this one is a DNF for me :(

10\10. This is one of the most beautiful games I've ever played, the puzzles are not that hard, the music and story are AMAZING, this is a must play game.

Call of the Sea is a short, cozy little puzzle walking simulator in the vein of The Talos Principle or the original Myst, centering around Norah, a woman with a mysterious terminal illness, tracing the steps of her missing archaeologist husband and his trip to an uncharted island in search of a cure. It pulls heavily from 1920s and 30s adventure serials like Haunted Island and Jungle Mystery, which lends to the cozy tone, but it shouldn't surprise you or any other gamer that with a mysteriously-blighted narrator pursuing an ill-fated expedition, the game swiftly turns towards its most enduring and obvious inspirations, H.P Lovecraft's At the Mountains of Madness and The Shadow over Innsmouth.

Where most 'Lovecraftian' games go hard on the slavering Mythos beasties, though, Call of the Sea remains perpetually in this colorful, wistful space -- the game itself describes its tone as 'homesick' -- that emphasizes the fantastical elements of the unknown more than it emphasizes the horrific elements. It eludes being a cosmic horror tale, and remains a character-driven drama throughout, told through constant narration by Norah herself in the fashion of Lovecraft's own very self-expository protagonists.

Thankfully, Norah remembers that this is a puzzle game, and so she wisely shuts up and defers to the player's wisdom when confronted with the game's eight or nine elaborate, brain-tingling puzzles. Each level fits roughly the same cadence, where Norah will walk around the level picking up clues and expositing about their narrative meaning, and then silently leave the player to assemble those clues in mechanical terms in a way that will get them around some obstacle. When the game begins these obstacles are fairly rudimentary and intuitive, like matching symbols on a totem to corresponding symbols on a dial lock, but as the game gets more supernatural they can get very involved. Most of my 'a-ha' moments were in these later levels, where I was frequently presented with a series of clues that didn't make sense together as a puzzle until I noticed some overlooked environment element that tied everything together into one context.

It's neither the most touching story a walking simulator has ever had, nor the best puzzles, nor the most lush environments, but the game hits a solid third-base run on all three of those, which is all the more impressive since this is developer Out of the Blue Games' first time at-bat. It's an excellent game package and well worth your time.

Good story. Loved the ending.

A very good little game. Doesn't over stay it's welcome, and the puzzles are rather good noodle scratchers. Definitely give this a go if you are a fan of said noodle scratching puzzles with the seasoning (Pun definitely intended) of a quaint Lovecraft-esque story.

Great story, music and visuals. The puzzles are somewhat irrational sometimes though but still, the game is definitely worth playing.

A few of the puzzles were somewhat non-intuitive, but otherwise it was pretty good. The story was the main reason I played it, and it did not disappoint.
