DOs and DON'Ts for new players
By Solomon
In this guide, you will learn the very basics of The Culling that I see many new players not taking advantage of.

Game Start
DO...
  • Have a general idea of the map layout. (See below. While the map is not entirely accurate, it gets most of the island right)
  • Locate the nearest building, run to it, and loot it.
  • If there is no nearby building or you fear that someone may have gotten there first, craft a weapon with the materials around your starting position.

DO NOT...
  • Waste time observing your surroundings. Time is money, or in this case, your life.
  • Wander around aimlessly when starting. The time you spend wandering the jungle is time your opponents are using to prepare to fight.
  • Fill your inventory with sticks and stones. Use them only for crafting a melee weapon. There are plenty of other sticks and stones scattered around the map. (You can also whack trees and rocky terrain with melee weapons to get sticks and stones, respectively)

Looting Structures
DO...
  • Be quick with what you pick up.
  • Organize your inventory and keep it organized. I prefer to have my melee weapon in my first slot, and keep stims in the bottom slots.
  • Recycle pointless items. This includes, but is not limited to: Alarm guns, bandages, X-Plosive Runs, Pepper Spray, etc. Basically, if you don't think it will help you in combat, turn it into FUNC.
  • Throw items you have no room in your inventory for by the recycler. This way you don't have to run all the way back in the structure to pick up the item just to recycle it. (Throwing items out windows also works, though it is a bit finnicky)
  • Stay alert. Remember, you're not the only one on this island...

DO NOT...
  • Waste time figuring out what you need and don't need. If you find an item you don't have a use for, pick it up and recycle it, or throw it by the recycler.
  • Keep a full inventory. If it's full, recycle what you don't need. You'll be wasting time trying to figure out what to do with with item A and contemplating whether to drop item B to make room for item C to recycle.
  • Leave any stone unturned, or loot a couple lockers and assume that's all there is. I've found plenty of partially-raided buildings that players just gave up on, and found plenty of useful items in. That building is yours, and so is everything in it.
Encountering Players
DO...
  • Assess the situation. Has the player seen you? Are they staring at you? Are they charging at you? Are they about to bash your skull in? These are all very important questions to ask yourself quickly.
  • Judge them. Are they wearing colorful clothing? Do they have flashy weaponry? If you feel you're outmatched, run away.

DO NOT...
  • Sprint towards them, weapon ready, yelling ALLAHU ACKBAR. This wastes a large amount of your stamina, and alerts the player to your presence, as well as what your first move will most likely be.
  • Assume they don't see you. You'll end up walking away casually from them, only to find what that noise was oh that's my spine ow ow ded. (Backstabs hurt is what I'm saying)
Combat
As of the Big House update, much of the information in this section may be outdated or irrelevant. I don't play The Culling anymore so I can't be bothered to see how it is now and/or update it accordingly. Follow at your own risk.

Vanilla Culling is back baby, this info is relevant again.

DO...
  • Be unpredictable. I cannot stress this enough. The Culling's combat system is a game of rock-paper-scissors. You have attacking, blocking, and shoving. Attack beats shove, shove beats block, and block beats attack. Use ALL of these to your advantage. (Protip: You can also press your block key to cancel a charged attack. Many players who think their hot ♥♥♥♥ will use this to trick you into performing a different move.. It's like playing R/P/S with your friend, and you throw rock, and they throw scissors, but they immediately change it to paper. ♥♥♥♥ move, but that's how it is)
  • Analyze your enemy. Do they like to block a lot? Shove them. Do they like attacking? Block 'em. Are they playing 12D chess and using all of their moves to their advantage? Play their game. Be unpredictable.
  • Stay on the offensive, and put your enemy on the defense. Make sure that you're dealing the most damage, and that they're getting very few hits in on you.
  • Be smart. If you're losing a fight and see an opportunity to run, then run. Players in this game are persistent and will chase you for a very long time, but don't give up. Just keep running.

DO NOT...
  • Spam the same move over and over again. This is the #1 problem all new players make. Your enemy will catch on and make you their ♥♥♥♥♥.
  • Spam the same attack when your not within striking range of your enemy. I see more players do this than you think. They'll just stand 10 feet in front of me flailing their weapon in the air, trying to ward me off or cast some voodoo spell on me or something. It doesn't work, it just wastes your stamina and makes you look like an idiot.
  • Turn your back to your enemy. Your back is the weakest part of your hitbox, being prone to double damage from melee weapons. Turning your back to run from your enemy is something I don't recommend unless I'm sure I'm already a decent distance away from them, and can run away successfully.
  • Get baited. If a player seems to be wanting you to follow them, don't follow them. Remember how your parents told you not to follow strangers even if they said they had candy? Same logic applies here. Only instead of candy, it's probably a snare, claymore, or C4 packet.
Calling Airdrops
DO...
  • Make sure you're far away from other players. Airdrops take a while to get to the pad, and attract a LOT of attention.
  • Stay hidden. Hide in a bush or a decent distance away from the pad, but be sure to keep it in sight. It's also a good idea to keep a Man Tracker out while waiting to ensure you're alone. If a player starts getting close, you may be able to get the drop on them.
  • Remain alert. Keep an eye on your airdrop at all times. If it gets shot down, note where it lands and head to it, although it may not end well. Actually, forget that, it will NOT end well.
  • Hit the drone with a weapon or object (such as an arrow) to make it drop early. Remember, you want your stuff, and you want it now.
  • Get your airdrop and get out of there. You're probably not the only one that noticed that drone.

DO NOT...
  • Dance around the pad and in the open. This makes noise. Your enemy can hear noise. Your enemy will find you.
  • Pursue downed aridrops. Odds are your enemy has already gotten your airdrop before you, and will actually be waiting for you to come and get your stuff. (And trust me, you'll get your stuff. Up your ass)
  • Stick around after getting your aridrop. You've already killed enough players to get what you want, why risk losing it all?
Surviving Map Closure (and possibly winning)
DO...
  • Stay calm. You've made it this far, don't blow it by making stupid choices.
  • Ensure you're prepared. Have your inventory sorted, make sure you're at full health, and no inventory spaces are empty.
  • Lurk in the shadows/out of sight. Enemy players will be looking for you. Remember, the goal is not to kill, but to survive.
  • Stay alert. Keep an eye on the scoreboard, and listen for nearby skirmishes. Once you can see that there are 3 to 4 players remaining, start circling the ring looking for your enemy. If it's just you and one more guy, seek him out. No more point in hiding, you'll just be giving your enemy time to prepare.
  • Finish off weak players. If there's a fight near you, move in slowly and quietly. Once both players are on low health, swoop in there and finish them off. (This is known as vulturing)

DO NOT...
  • Stand in the middle of the Culmination waiting for your victims. You fail to see that you are the victim in this situation, being susceptible to attacks from all sides.
  • Wander around in the open. You'll be in the water. Water is noisy. Your enemy hears noise.
  • Be an idiot. Think rationally. Don't get baited into a trap. Your enemy is sneaky, and wants nothing more than your heart roasted on a spit.

Solomon, blocking is pretty much pointless in the game. Instead of throwing your enemy off balance, all it does is "weaken" him. But he can still go about stabbing like crazy, though he only does 50% damage for a while and his own blocks only block 50% damage... you can tell it's pointless because the hardcore players don't really use it they only dodge and attack, and wait for the opponent to block and then they shove (which throws you off balance like it used to).

That's why I said: Rock - Paper - Scissor no more. They ruined the old game concept completely now with this nonsense.

Personally, I find that its a good idea to fill empty inventory slots with rocks and sticks, as you can always throw them if you need to, and get rid of them when you find better items.

Do... Uninstall this game
Do not... Think this game is worth playing as they completely ruined the melee system.
