Hello fellow TF2 player ! Today, I will be introucing you to everything single reference and secret hidden behind the paintjobs applied to the Decorated weapons !

Warning : this guide has quite an amount of pictures, it may take some seconds to load entirely.

Warning 2 : English isn't my native language, and my british friend was too lazy to spellcheck me, so there may be some mistakes here and there ; apologies for that.

With all of that said, enjoy !

Collection - Teufort

The Teufort collection is called after a map which was avialable on Team Fortress 2's launch, which is called ctf_2fort. This map is still from the most popular ones nowadays, even though it isn't reputed for being one of the best ones. Obviously enough, many skins in this collection, if not most, will revolve around this emblematic map's elements, but also around the TF2 universe as a whole.
Skin - Citizen Pain
The RED variant of the Citizen Pain Minigun is from a fictional advertisement you can find on many TF2 maps, but strangely enough, not on 2fort. Here's an example of it in the BLU "Sniper balcony" of Hightower.

Skin - Team Sprayer
The Team Sprayer SMG is featured on the Meet your Match update page Interestingly enough, the SMG model appears to have been modified, as the ammo clip is much thinner than those on regular Sub-Machine Guns, An the handle looks like it has been bent.

Skin - Treadplate Tormenter
The Treadplate Tormenter SMG was taken from a part of the 2fort map. It originates from the long staircase leading to the intelligence room, on both RED and BLU teams. You can find a screenshot of the staircase below.

Skin - Bogtrotter

The Bogtrotter Sniper Rifle refers another part of the 2fort map, which is the water basin, below the bridge connecting both team's areas. The basin in question is filled with nenuphars, which is very notable on the skin.

Interestingly enough, you have a rare chance at having the "frog prop" on your sniper rifle. This frog is a very popular and memey prop found within the game files, and has been used multiple times by the TF2 community as a meme. You can see the frog on the texture file below, along the the basin represented on the rifle, and a video displaying how the frog has been used by the community.

Here's the screenshot of the basin. -->

<-- Here's the texture file, if you want to check the frog for yourself.

And here's the video of the community using the
frog. (Skip to 11:56 to see the frogs.) -->
Skin - Bovine Blazemaker
The Bovine Blazemaker Flame Thrower was purposefully designed as a cow. Indeed, on 2fort, from the RED's courtyard, you can observe two flat cows made out of wood, which may produce an occasional "moo" sound.

These cows got so popular in TF2, they're now a common reference among most TF2 players. They were used plenty of times by several Gmod youtubers, turning these cows into a meme. You can find an example in the form of a video below.

The two cows near the RED courtyard. -->
<-- A wooden cow in a Gmod video (Skip to 0:52 to see the cow.).
Skin - War Room
The War Room Minigun was taken from the intelligence room, in 2fort, which looks like a room where everything about the spytech or the australium warfare is planned (And where it's unusual to find less than 2 sentries grouped together.).

Collection - Craftsmann

The Craftsmann collection revolves around a sort of "homemade" theme. Most of these weapons have an "out there" look, and the vast majority of them have something to see with woodworking, carpentry, woodcutting, lumberjacks and even farmers. Flashy or sober, they all have rather simple colorings and patterns.
Skin - Plaid Potshotter
The Plaid Potshotter refers to two things :
-The plaid texture covering the vast majority of the gun
-A potshot, which is a shot in the dark an unaimed shot, usually taken at random (Referencing players who spray the SMG without actually aiming it, or who are not the best snipers out there)
Skin - Iron Wood
The Iron Wood is a modification of the slang term "Ironwood" commonly used in woodworking, which refers to type of trees that are known to be incredibly solid and tough to cut. It was probably called the Iron Wood due to Sasha being very heavy and damaging, making the Heavy Weapons Guy the best class a tough class to kill.
Skin - Barn Burner
The Barn Burner Flame Thrower is very certainly a reference to the official TF2 video "Meet the Pyro", where the Pyro locks the BLU Medic in a barn, before burning it in its entirety with the help of its flame thrower. You can find the video down below (Medic in barn at 1:31).

Skin - Homemade Heater
The Homemade Heater has a small chance at having an arrowed TF logo on its handle, as you can see on the texture below.

Something noteworthy about the Homemade Heater, is its presence on the bottom of the Gun Mettle Update page, showcasing the new inspect animations, intended for the new decorated weapons. The strange part though, is the presence of a stat clock on a Homemade Heater on the picture. Indeed, strange Homemade Heaters were not a thing through the entirety of the Gun Mettle Update - instead, they were made possible with the implementation of the Civilian Grade Stat Clock, on the 29th of February 2016 update. And even after them being avialable, they did not exist before a month after the 29th of February, due to their extreme rarity. Let me quickly show you what you'll need to go through the only way you may get one of these :
  • 100 Civilian Grade Stat Clocks (More informations on how to obtain them on the wiki page)
  • 100 Civilian Skins from the Craftsmann collection
  • some luck
You then need to make all of these skins strange, with the help of the stat clocks. After you've done this step, you'll need to do 10 item grade trade-ups, in order to turn your 100 Civilian skins into 10 Freelances ones. Afterwards, you're going to turn your 10 freelances into one strange mercenary grade craftsmann weapon (which can either be a Rustic Ruiner, a Barn Burner, or a Homemade Heater, which is why you'll need luck - you don't get to choose between the three).

Was this picture here to give us some indications on the future updates? It's quite certain, in my opinion. But then, why would they showcase a strange Homemade Heater while it wasn't even out? Well, that may have just been a hint from them, to get people in the TF2 community to ask themselves questions, or perhaps simply a promotional strategy.

(The best part of the story, is that the pistol showcased in the update page, is still not even a thing ! I've researched on this a little bit, and from what I've gathered, there are (by the time I'm writing this) only 5 strange Homemade Heaters in existence, and all of them are Factory New. It's fairly easy to see that the one Valve decided to pick to show the new inspect animation has a whole bunch of scratches - there's no way this thing can be factory new. This pistol still has yet to come to existence...)
Skin - Lumber From Down Under
The Lumber From Down Under is reminescent of the Sniper's home country, Australia New Zealand. Some might argue that "Down Under" may refer to, from an USA / European centric point of view, both Australia and New-Nealand located to the south, but I have quite a different hypothesis on the matter. As it is said in the TF2 comic "Blood in the Water", New Zealand has been sunk under water; therefore, anything coming from New Zealand might be said to be "From Down Under".
Collection - Concealed Killer

The Concealed Killer weapons collection offers a wide variety of colors to pick from, inspired from military camouflaging and denims. Flashy colors are nearly everywhere, to a point where we might ask ourselves if they might not just look out of place, given the theme of the collection is all about stealth. But hey, we're in TF2 after all, we're used to see flashy colors, paints and unusuals on a daily basis ; they may not fit the theme, but they definitely fit in TF2.
Skin - Backwoods Boomstick
The Backwoods Boomstick is inspired from standard military camouflaging. That also applies to the King of the Jungle Minigun, as they both use the same texture.

Another thing worth mentioning, is that the main texture applied on these weapons has all of the class logos hidden inside. Here's the texture file if you want to take a look (good luck to spot the Pyro).

Skin - Night Owl
The Night Owl is a mix between the Sudden Flurry and the Night Terror ; it probably makes up for a good night time urban camo, if I were to venture on a wild guess. An interesting thing to note though, is how bright the scope's lid is, maybe representing the owl's bright eyes / great vision at night.
Skin - Night Terror
The Night Terror was quite obviously taken from night time camouflage. An interesting note though : it is a simple recoloring of the Backwoods Boomstick / King of the Jungle main texture, and has therefore all of the class symbols on it. It also has a TF logo added to it.
Skin - Wrapped Reviver
The Wrapped Reviver appears to have some random holly christmas decoration all over it : in fact, these aren't completely random, as they're all made out of medical crosses. You may see how that looks down below :

Skin - Woodland Warrior
The Woodland Warrior features a tiny spycrab, probably referencing how sneaky the Spy can be, and how well his camouflaging capabilities have proven in this game.

Skin - Sudden Flurry
The Sudden Flurry Stickybomb Launcher has an urban camouflage applied on it, which is used for city warfare, outside of TF2. The geometric shapes probably make up a better camouflage when fighting in a city.

Something extremely interesting about the Sudden Flurry can be found on the Gun Mettle launch page. Indeed, if you pay close attention, you will notice some strange stuff about the Sudden Flurry featured on the main image on top of the update page. Not only did they change the stickybomb launcher's model (which none of the gun mettle skins do in-game, including the Sudden Flurry) (the changes include something to open the chamber, and a missing reload thingy), and two modified textures are applied on the gun
(on the reticle, and on the non-flat part of the cylindric chamber). But this isn't the strangest thing you may find on this picture (which you can find here, by the way).

In fact, two sudder flurries are present on this picture, and the second one, in a crate, is completely untouched. Was this a previous version of the stickybomb launcher? Was this done for promotional purposes only? Was this indicative of the future TF2 updates? All three may be correct, for a number of reasons I will not bother listing here ; make up your own opinion on this subject, if it interests you this much. You can find the unmodified versions of the textures applied on the Sudden Flurry in-game.

Skin - Red Rock Roscoe
From what I've gathered, it's inspired from an Australian Red Rock, oftentimes nicknamed as "Uluru". Something noteworthy on this paintjob though, is about what only appears to be stylish staining on the gun : in fact, these stains picture kangaroos and the common cartographic representation of Australia, (the kangaroos being a known stereotype of a country TF2 loves to glorify, Australia ; Not only because the Sniper is Australian (As I wrote in the Lumber From Down Under section, he's not actually Australian), but mainly due to the very precious metal called "Australium" the administrator is seeking). You can check the texture yourself, if you wish to see the kangaroos and the small Australias :

Skin - Psychedelic Slugger
The Psychedelic Slugger is the big bad boy of this collection, the one that stands out of it by its meaning and its inspiration. Indeed, it wasn't inspired from any sort of camouflaging (as you can tell by the very flashy and noticeable colors applied on it) ; it was instead inspired from hippies, those who fought not to go to war. To further this idea, a balloonicorn is present on the main texture of the gun (yeah I know, the theme of peace on a gun is rather self-contradictory, but how else do you want that done, it's a weaponry collection), representing the peacefulness of Spy's worst enemy, the W+M1 Pyro.

On another interesting note, the green stains read "TF2", if you're lucky enough to have them on the handle of the gun, or by just seeing the main texture, which you can check right below.

Collection - Powerhouse

The Powerhouse collection is based on the TF2 map released along with the Gun Mettle Update, cp_powerhouse. Its focus on electricity, water and light makes up for a rather explosive collection, with all kinds of sparkly stuff added on the paintjobs. But as we will find out below, some of these decorations were quite cleverly placed, considering its deep inspiration from elements of the Powerhouse map...
Skin - Aqua Marine
The Aqua Marine is a rocket launcher which refers to a specific area of the Powerhouse map, near the central control point, where you can find quite a quantity of water to swim in. You can find a screenshot of the area below.

It also refers to the fact that turbines require water to produce electricity (I know not all of them do, but at least, those present on the map do.).

Skin - Lightning Rod
The Lightning Rod Shotgun refers to a baguette stick that is commonly placed on house roofs to prevent thunder from striking the house.

More importantly, there are electricity transformers on the top of some buildings in Powerhouse, which pretty much fullify the same functionality as a lightning rod, which is to reduce enormous amounts of electricity into next to nothing (the difference being, transformers transfer a big, but finite amount into something the factory / house may use, while the lightning rod is here to entirely deny random charges), which could be another explanation / reason for a skin to be called Lightning Rod. You can see the 4 lightning rods on the picture below.

Although this is another very personal interpretation, but classes that can wield a shotgun tend to be yummy targets for a Sniper, especially Heavies and Engineers. Interestingly enough, the Sniper has a sniper rifle called "Thunderbolt", in the same collection.

Not to mention, I believe this shotgun was especially made for the Engineer : with 11 doctorates in engineering, he should obviously know alot about electricity. Moreover, he has a very similar pistol, called the Black Dahlia, which is in the same collection. These were meant to be used together, just like the Sandstone Special should belong to the Scout, because of the similar colours used on this pistol and the Current Event Scattergun. My point is, this shotgun was meant to be used by Engineers, and Engineers are usually high-priority targets for Snipers.

Skin - Low Profile
The Low Profile SMG refers to many weapons picked from the Sniper's arsenal, such as the Sniper Rifle, the SMG, the Huntsman, the Jarate, and the Kukri.

Keeping a low profile is also the fact of, when asked if we know about a certain situation / event, we (untruthfully) reply that we do not, for the purpose of protecting someone involved in the same situation / event.

This reference was (in my opinion) done because of how much the Sniper can see of the battlefield (and therefore, acknowledge on his own what's going on, and which event to focus on) ; while most classes do only know or care about a certain player from the enemy team, the Sniper can usually see all of them, and get to choose which one to pick first. And because he's usually the only one to know this much about the current fights, he's keeping a low profile not to reveal to anyone this knowledge, to keep a tactical advantage over his enemies (or his allies, to topscore and pubstomp).

Here's the main texture of the gun, if you want to check out for yourself all the weapons that can be put on the weapon (that sounds pretty weird, indeed).

Skin - Brick House
The Brick House Minigun refers to specific areas on the Powerhouse map, which are built out of bricks. Indeed, each team's "factory", from the outside, are entirely made out of bricks, as you can see on the screenshot below.

Although it may be unrelated, but I think its colors palette come from the trucks you can see near the central point, in each team's garage. This, or the barrels inside the trucks (or nearby). You can also check these in the screenshot.

What made me think of the truck? Well firstly, the colours were quite similar; and then, the Heavy's ability to plow through defenses / roll over the attacking team.

Skin - Dead Reckoner
The Dead Reckoner Revolver refers to two small skulls findable on two barrels on the Powerhouse map. These barrels can be found in the building separating both BLU's and RED's "factory" areas, as the screenshot below displays.

The skulls as represented on the barrel are here to significate the lethality of its content, though the skulls on the revolver were put in a specific way. Indeed, a skull on a black background is most of the time a common representation of pirates, which were a bunch of people on a boat, basically attacking other ships in order to steal all of their valuable items. Them being represented as a skull on a black background comes from the fact that they commonly used this symbol on the flag, which they sported on their ship to clearly indicate their intentions to other ships.

Another notable thing about this skinned weapon, is about some specific skeletons on the texture file. Because of the revolver's size, they're uncommonly seen in their entirety, or even properly seen. These skeletons have a Modest Pile of Hat, a Towering Pillar of Hats, an Eye-Catcher, one of them even have a pair of eyes (possibly the Pop-Eyes), which is there to remind players about how obsessed is the TF2 community with hats since 2009, or cosmetic items more recently.

Piratry? Hats? Trading? Danger? Does it ring a bell? Yes, this revolver may be related to the fact that scammers and phishers are a thing in TF2. Although this is pretty unlikely, as this is only my opinion.

And here's the main texture of the revolver, if you want to check out the hatted skeletons (If you pay close attention, one of them has a knife ; it's a Spy weapon, after all)

Skin - Spark Of Life

The RED variant of the Spark Of Life Medigun refers to a huge symbol you can see when you enter the RED's zone. You can find a screenshot of the symbol in question below. Outside of this, I don't have much else to tell about it. The logo is located behind the "WOOD ELECTRIC" written in bold letters.

Skin - Black Dahlia
The Black Dahlia refers to either :

-A woman that was violently murdered in 1947 - she acquired such a moniker from either her large black haircut, or the black dress she was wearing the last day she's been seen alive. Elizabeth Short's murder case is one of the oldest case of unsolved murder in Los Angeles.
More information on the Black Dahlia case[en.wikipedia.org]

-One of the many films, novels or even video games derived from the same slicing murder case.
Skin - Liquid Asset
The Liquid Asset Stickybomb Launcher is frankly the one which surprised me the most, out of all the references, and for a very good reason : "liquid asset" doesn't refer to Powerhouse (maybe the water part, see Aqua Marine) nor something particular to the Demoman whatsoever. In fact, the name "Liquid Asset" refers to the weapon's grade, and its rarity !

I'm not even kidding, this item is totally referring to how rare it is. A Liquid Asset, if I didn't misunderstand, is a "stable" item in a particular economic system. It is in fact so stable, it can be used as a currency, though it isn't guaranteed to remain 100% safe, just like "real currencies" are. And there was a very great example of that in the TF2 community. Remember when buds were so valuable, they were used as a currency to buy unusuals? Most people assumed they were pretty stable at 26 keys each, before an event which many people like to call "the fall of buds" happened. All you need to know, is that buds went from the go-to unusual trading currency, standing at a stable 26 keys each, before quickly falling to 3 keys in march 2015. Here's a video from TheVirtualEconomist, which explains everything you need to know about the fall of buds, much more thoroughly than I can, if the topic interests you.

There are many different in-game examples of liquid assets :
-the Mann Co. Supply Crate Keys, which will always be the safest and most stable currency, due to them having a defined price ($2.49).
-The Max's Severed Head, which is commonly used as a replacement for keys in a trade where hundreds of keys are necessary
-Australium Weapons are very demanded and consistently sell for pure, at their backpack.tf price, but due to their supply constantly increasing, I wouldn't consider as a viable long-term currency ; although this is purely a matter of opinions. Some treat Australium Weapons as pure, and some don't.

Enough chit chat about the TF2 economy there, I was only trying to explain what a liquid asset was through examples which I believe many of you are familiar with. This Stickybomb Launcher is an item like many others, and because of its rarity, it will never be a currency : but I thought the reference to the TF2 trading community was worth mentionning here.

Additionally, the main texture of the Liquid asset contains two small Scrumpy bottles, which have a medium chance of appearing on the gun. These point towards a common cliché about isolated shipwreckeds lost on an island, which throw a bottle with a request for help written in the bottle.

Moreover, the bottles may represent how the Demoman uses bottles as his main asset, thus "Liquid Asset".
Footnotes
Some sources and pieces of informations worth giving a read :

If there's anything of relevancy you know that I didn't say, you can share your knowledge in the comments below with everybody, and I will consider adding your recommendations to the guide !

If there are really lots of things you have to add on the guide, or simply like decorated weapons just as much as I do, you can also throw me an add.

If I find the time and the references to (which I probably will), I will probably be writing a second part to this guide, dedicated to the Tough Break weapons, so stay tuned folks !

About the War Room skin: It's not primarily connected to Teufort. While the "thermonuclear war world map" texture can be found as a wall display on several in-game maps, the most iconic instance can be seen in the main spawn room on cp_Coldfront.

In fact, the entirety of the Cold Front spawn room in the RED and BLU bases is designed as a homage to the "War Room" scenes in Stanley Kubrick's 1964 movie 'Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb', a black comedy/satire on the Cold War and its idea of "peace through the threat of mutually assured destruction" resulting in the construction of a Doomsday Device.

Like that movie, the canon lore of TF2 started out as a satire on the Cold War as well. The character of the utterly insane, hyperpatriotic US General Ripper in 'Dr. Strangelove' manages to be even more batshit crazy than the TF2 Soldier.

Let's add some extra informations :

1 ) There is a unused pattern for the craftsmanns collection (craft/metal_tfengraving.vtf)

2) Masked Mender :

• The pattern camo/topographic.vtf have a unused team colored pattern (camo/topographic_blue.vtf)

• A another unused pattern (camo/dazzle.vtf) is used in the creation of the brown stripes in the camo/topographic.vtf pattern. You can verify by comparing the two textures. To note the hidden spy in the bottom left-hand corner of the textures.
