Description
Coastal Map: Vlerkenburg

This map has a broad river delta that is surrounded by rough cliffs on its borders. The coast has smooth sandy beaches, and a handfull of tiny islands. Though there is plenty of elevation there is also lots of room to build your city.

Water
The main river splits in two right after entering the playing area, after which both rivers split again, the inner arms of the rivers meet at the coast. This gives the map a nice fragmented landscape. The current on the rivers is very strong. It should push sewage out to sea at a high speed. I've added four small lakes: one with a sandy beach, one along the river, a sereen mountain lake, and a square basin that can be used for sewage or pumping. They all have their own water source, so they won't dry up.

Infrastructure
The map has four highways that intersect on two locations. Between these locations lies the starting tile, so that traffic spreads out evenly. There are three railroads, one passing the starting tile. Along the coast are ship routes. Only the large river has a ship route, to prevent an overwhelming amount of traffic on the waterways.

Resources
There is a lot of farmland, and it has a mix of thick and very narrow treelines. Between the many farmplots are oil fields. The mountain range further inland has large fields of ore, but there is also an ore field near the starting area.

I named the map Vlerkenburg, because I thought it would sound funny in English. Vlerk is an outdated Dutch word that means 'rascal'.

Let me know if you have suggestions, feedback or if you just want to show some pictures of your city! Have fun!

I swear there is something wrong with this map. I only have 30 000 people living in my city with highway going through my city. Somehow there is a HUGE line of traffic coming from the edge of the map to the center of my city. I feel that its random that tons of people work out of the city? and many tourists are heading to places that dont exist. Btw im using the highway the map has and that traffic comes from all highways entering and exiting the map. And the lines of traffic slowly move. Help?

Best map ever!

@Eldrarak1982, That's funny because my next map is inspired a bit by the Conwy map. Which I agree is absolutely beautiful. I really like the dual trees lines. His maps are very well crafted, though I personally don't like using mods for maps.

I normally make sure the starting tile is comfortable to build in, since there are many players that don't use the 25 tiles unlocked mod. So, because of that the starting tile will always have enough flat space, flowing water and at least one highway and one railway. Another thing I do is that I want each tile have a special reason to be purchased, it could be something like a scenic hill, farmland, a polder, resources or a large river delta. The game is at it's best when you get to plan the city.

Thanks for your suggestions! I'm going to upload my next map Great Flutland in a moment.

Also, Zak...For a really good example of a map that did a terrific job with it's highway and rural route system, I'd definitely suggest MrMiyagi's Conwy, Wales map. While I do understand that requiring mods for a map is a bit risky, take a look at how he's used the Network Extension Rural Highways to set the tone for this map. If you've not already played on it, it'd great for inspiration (and the ONLY map I play Euro theme with).

@Zakerias I can't wait! Your attention to detail and care to make sure that the terrain flows and feels natural is paramount.

Also, I've learned that those maps that took great care in placing realistic and smooth highways and rail lines all end up with much higher quality. There's nothing worse than starting a map with a highway with 45 degree angle overpasses, sharp corners, and absurd heights. None of your maps have made this mistake as far as I've seen, but I think it's worth reinforcing this standard.

@Eldrarak1982 Thanks! I'm happy you like it! Currently I'm working on a nice non-european Island map. It will be released very soon.

Hey Zak, I just also wanted to add my input here. I've tried literally hundreds of different maps (I'm super picky), and I can at this point honestly say that Vlerkenburg is my all-time favorite map for C:S. I am SUPER happy that you released this is the Temperate theme, because since the European update, it's been incredible hard to find many high-quality non-Euro maps. Vlerkenburg has become a required download for me, and I don't know what I'd do it it ever disappeared....
Please please make more maps like this (in non-Euro themes).
