I've been messing about with my own today and stumbled across something I thought you might find interesting / something I thought about when experimenting with your mod. Here's my screen shot to show the difference in brightness levels based on the compressing of the .dds:

When saving as a .dds I saved using "8.8 16bpp AL alpha/luminance" with the NVIDIA photoshop plugin (if you're using that). I think you'll agree it made a huge difference to the in-game brightness of the texture.
