SMRI-MOD and Holiday_Scenario + Custom Maps

After following this instructions you will be able to use the SMRI_1.01-Mod and the Holiday_Scenario (The Winter-Map!) (and of course user created Maps!) in the steam version of Sid Meier's Railroads!

I made this instructions from my experiences and it's espacially for the steam-installation of Sid Meier's Railroads!
I tested it with a Windows 8.1 64 Bit notebook!
EDIT 27 FEBRUARY 2017: Also tested on Windows 10 Pro 64 Bit -> Working perfectly without any crash!! See description for more details.

I decided to form this guid out of my original discussion post in the community hub of Sid Meier's Railroads. It already helped alot of people and so I hope it will help you too!

Edit: Reworked on 5. March 2025 and made sure that the installation of the Mod still works.

This is the english instruction. If you want to read the instructions in german you need to scroll down or click on ".: German :." in the summary.
SMRI Installation Instructions
  1. Make sure you have a fresh steam-game-installation of Sid Meiers Railroads.

  2. Start the game a first time (important).
  3. Exit the game.

  4. Download SMRI1.01
    http://www.moddb.com/mods/sid-meiers-railroads-intercontinental/downloads/smri101

  5. Unzip the downloaded .zip-package to your desktop.

  6. Go to your Steam-installation of Sid Meiers Railroads e.g.:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Sid Meier's Railroads

  7. Now open the folder "Assets" from that folder and copy all the files (it's about 1,4 gb)

  8. Go to:
    %USERPROFILE%\Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Railroads
    Or:
    D:\Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Railroads

  9. Open the folder "CustomAssets"
  10. Now paste the copied files
  11. Wait till it's done
  12. Now open the folder "Localization" from the fresh pasted files
  13. Copy all the files again (it's about 57 mb)
  14. Go 1 folder back (to "CustomAssets")
  15. Open the folder "XML"
  16. Paste the copied files
  17. Now go to your desktop and double-click on "Setup_SMRI_1.01" with your left mouse-button (with Admin-rights).

  18. On the "welcome-page" of the installer click "Next"
    (if a notification appears then just click "ok" (maybe pops up serveral times))

  19. In the "Destination Folder"-inputbox you must delete the "Sid Meier's Railroads!" word.
    If you have a folder like this:
    "D:\Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Railroads\Sid Meier's Railroads!", the installation of SMRI WILL fail!!
    If you have a folder like this:
    "D:\Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Railroads", then everything is okay.
  20. Now you can click the "Install"-button. So do it!

    If you receive the errormessage "Fail to save RRT_Trains" then just do the installation again. It will work the second time.

    This is how the "Documents-Folder" of Sid Meier's Railroads should look like now:

  21. Open the game from Steam.
  22. Choose the map "A Tycoon's Tale".

  23. Have fun with SMRI1.01-Mod and playing the christmas-map!!

Custom Maps Installation Instructions
  1. Go to: http://smrsimple.com/map-database/
  2. Select a map of your choice and download it.
  3. Extract the folder with the map-name to:
    %USERPROFILE%\Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Railroads\UserMaps

    If there is no folder and just the files of the map then you need to create a folder before.

    If there is a file with the ending ".FPK" then you need to copy/extract it to:
    %USERPROFILE%\Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Railroads\CustomAssets

  4. Open the game, select and play the map!

Note: This works just with problems (for me). Some maps didn't load and some maps crash. It has something to do with the custom assets I think. But it's a way to test different maps and hopefully enjoy them without problems. ;-)

Dies ist die deutsche Beschreibung der Installation.
SMRI Installationsbeschreibung
  1. Stelle sicher, dass du eine neue und frische steam installation von Sid Meier's Railroads hast.

  2. Starte das Spiel ein erstes mal (wichtig!).
  3. Verlasse das Spiel.

  4. Download SMRI1.01
    http://www.moddb.com/mods/sid-meiers-railroads-intercontinental/downloads/smri101

  5. Unzippe das gedownloadete .zip-Paket auf deinen Desktop.

  6. Nun öffne den Steam-Installationsordner von Sid Meier's Railroads e.g.:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Sid Meier's Railroads

  7. Nun öffne den Ordner "Assets" von diesem Ordner und kopiere alle dateien darin (ca. 1,4 gb)

  8. Gehe zu:
    %USERPROFILE%\Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Railroads
    Oder:
    D:\Dokumente\My Games\Sid Meier's Railroads

  9. Öffne den Ordner "CustomAssets"
  10. Jetzt füge alle zuvor kopierten Dateien hier ein.
  11. Warte bis der Vorgang abgeschlossen ist.
  12. Nun öffne den Ordner "Localization" von den gerade kopierten Dateien.
  13. Kopiere hier wieder alle Dateien (ca. 57 mb)
  14. Gehe 1 Ordner zurück (zu "CustomAssets")
  15. Öffne den Ordner "XML"
  16. Füge alle kopierten Dateien hier ein.
  17. Nun gehe zu deinem Desktop und doppel klicke auf "Setup_SMRI_1.01" mit deiner linken Maustaste (mit Admin rechten!).

  18. In der "welcome-page" des Installers auf "Next" klicken
    (Wenn ein Hinweis erscheint, dann einfach auf "ok" klicken (könnte mehrmals aufploppen))

  19. In der "Destination Folder"-inputbox musst du das "Sid Meier's Railroads!" Wort löschen.
    Wenn du so einen Ordner hast:
    "D:\Dokumente\My Games\Sid Meier's Railroads\Sid Meier's Railroads!", dann WIRD die Installation von SMRI NICHT funktionieren!!
    Wenn du so einen Ordner hast:
    "D:\Dokumente\My Games\Sid Meier's Railroads", dann ist alles okay.
  20. Jetzt kannst du den "Install"-button anklicken. Also tu es!

    Wenn du die Fehlermeldung "Fail to save RRT_Trains" erhälst, dann wiederhole einfach die Installation. Es wird beim zweiten Anlauf funktionieren!

    So sollte dein "Dokument-Ordner" von Sid Meier's Railroads nun aussehen:

  21. Öffne das Spiel von Steam aus.
  22. Wähle die map "A Tycoon's Tale".

  23. Habe viel Spaß mit der SMRI1.01-Mod und mit der Weihnachtsmap!!
    24. [/b]SMRI MOD AUF WINDOWS 10 Pro 64 Bit!!---Edit: Zuletzt am 5. März 2025 überarbeitet und sichergestellt, dass die installation der Mod immer noch funktioniert.
Eigene Maps Installationsbeschreibung
  1. Gehe zu: http://smrsimple.com/map-database/
  2. Wähle eine Map deiner Wahl und lade sie herunter.
  3. Extrahiere den Ordner mit dem Map-Namen zu:
    %USERPROFILE%\Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Railroads\UserMaps

    Wenn da kein Ordner ist, sondern nur die Dateien der Map, dann musst du erst einen Ordner erschaffen.

    Wenn da eine Datei mit der Endung ".FPK" ist, dann musst du sie kopieren/extrahieren zu:
    %USERPROFILE%\Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Railroads\CustomAssets

  4. Öffne das Spiel, wähle die Map und genieße sie!

Achtung: Das funktioniert bei mir nur mit Problemen. Einige Maps laden nicht oder crashen. Ich denke, dass es mit den "Custom Assets" zu tun hat. Aber es ist ein möglicher Weg verschiedene Maps zu testen und hoffentlich auch ohne Probleme zu spielen. ;-)

Regarding frequent crashes I recomend this hack / fix:

It enables long play sessions without crash. However custom maps from the mod and other custom user maps can often be problematic and they are crashing kinda often (also for me).

We need a remaster of the game I guess :D

Guys, tell me what to do if crashes occur only if I install SMRI. I use Windows 11, I went strictly according to the guide, with copying assets and contents of the localization folder. The mod installer executes everything, but not a single scenario loads in the game, all crash. Iff I delete the mod via the exe in the documents, then all of scenarios are loaded again. What can be done?

what should I do if it says "failed to traverse XPath in RRT_TrainCars.xml"

Actually it works. It is just absolutely necessary to copy the files from the localisation folder (step 12) to the XML (step 16) so the patch skips some of the checks and finishes patching (step 19).

Never mind I sorted it. Think i missed open folder xml step
