My guide in Chinese:------>Click Here<------

Sometimes I can't find proper words to express my ideas and there will be plenty of grammar mistakes. >_<

It will be appreciated if you can point them out and correct them for me. :)

Hope this guide can do some help.

Game Basics
Game Inteface
Each character has 3 basic attributes: Hunger, Sanity and Health.

Hunger drains at 75 points per game day( 112.5 as normal Wolfgang, or 225 as mighty). When your hunger reaches 0, health will drain at 1.25 points per second.

Sanity drains at dusk and night, or when monsters are nearby, or eat wrong food. When your sanity is too low, Crawling Horrors and Terrorbeaks will start to attack you. It will be terrible.

Health is lost when a character takes damage while attacked, burning, starving, or freezing. Losing all Health results in death. When each player in a game is dead, game is over.

Characters Tiers (personal opinion)
Host:
Host must know how to hunt.
1. Wolfgang
Recommended levels: ★★★★★
High damage is awesome. But if you are new to this game, I still don't recommend him.
2. Wilson
Recommended levels: ★★★★★
As I said, he has no disadvantages. He is always the best choice for new players.
3. Others

Guests:
Take care of yourself. Your death will bring a global debuff for your teammates that Sanity keep draining. Saving others take much time, and sometimes this may cause domino effect.
Don't put yourself in danger because of lagging.

1. Wendy
Recommended levels: ★★★★★
Abigail is controlled by code. You can hunt safely without worrying about lagging.
What is more, Abigail is so good at killing spiders. Have a try, why not?

2.Wilson
Recommended levels: ★★★★★
He is always the best choice for new players. Sorry for repeat. ;)

3. Wickerbottom
Recommended levels: ★★★★☆
Wicker bottom can provide backpack at start, and can read her book to advance growing.
She is really a good choice, but one Wickerbottom will be enough.

4. Willow
Recommended levels: ★★★☆☆
New players can't easily control their Sanity, while Willow with low Sanity is dangerous.

5. WX-78
Recommended levels: ★★☆☆☆
In default world, there are no enough gears for WX-78. If he can't upgrade, he won't be a good choice.

6. Wolfgang
Recommended levels: ★☆☆☆☆
The only advantage is high damage. However, lagging will destroy you.
Animals - part 1
Creature catogory:
1. Aggressive
Attack you when they have noticed you.
2. Neutral
Don't attack you when you don't attack them.
3. Passive
Don't fight back when attacked.

Neutral
Health: 100
Damage: 10
Loot:16.7%, 83.3%, ()
Spawns from

Tips:
1. Don't attack them until you want to build bee boxes.
2. Abigail can keep stunning bees.

Killer Bee

Aggressive
Health: 100
Damage: 10

Loot:16.7%, 83.3%, ()
Spawns from

Tips:
1. Abigail can take care of killer bees by keeping stunning them.
2. The other good way to clear killer bee hives is planting Fleshy Bulb near them.

Beefalo

Neutral as normal
Aggressive in heat
Health: 500*2
(500 hp in DS, 1000 in DST to make it harder to hunt)
Damage: 34
Loot: *4, *3, 33%, (periodic), *3()

Tips:
1. Hunting method: When the player attacks one Beefalo, all nearby Beefalo will become aggressive. However, every Beefalo that was not attacked will lose interest in the player fairly quickly, while the one that was attacked will chase the player longer. Beefalo are faster than the player, but they must stop for a moment to attack, and their attack is not instant, meaning if the player keeps running, they probably will not get hit. This makes it possible to attack a single Beefalo and lure it away from the herd, because the rest of the herd will stop chasing.
Hit 5 times and walk away, continue doing this and finally you will kill it.
2. You can make Beefalo Hat with and . It is one of the best warming clothing with an insulation factor of 240(240 seconds warming in Winter).
3. Beefalos become hostile periodically, during which time it spawns Baby Beefalos. In this period, Beefalos will become aggressive unless you have a Beefalo Hat on.
4. Don't kill Baby Beefalos.
5. Beefalos can protect you from Hounds.
6. You can make them move by using .

Birds

Passive
Loot: , 50%, 50%, ()

Tips:
1. Catched bird can be put into Birdcage.
2. Spoiling Meats can be saved from turning into Rot or Rotten Eggs by converting them into fresh Eggs.
3. The bird can be used to convert meats that are not accepted by the Pig King into Eggs, which are accepted in exchange for Gold Nuggets.
4. Normal spoiling seeds can be given to a caged bird to get fresh seeds in return, making it possible to keep seeds from ever spoiling. Spoiling eggs can be cooked and given to the bird in return for fresh eggs.
5. The Birdcage is good for Winter, when food resources are limited, as the player can feed the bird an easy-to-acquire Cooked Monster Meat or other Monster Meat-based items to get fresh Eggs in return, which can be eaten or further be used in Crock Pot recipes.

Butterfly

Passive
Health: 1
Loot: 98%, 2%,()
Spawns from

Tips:
1. Hunting method: You can come close to Butterflies when they stay still, then press Ctrl+F to kill them. Butterfly wings can give you +8 Health and +9.375 Hunger.
2. Catched Butterfles can be used to plant flowers. More flowers nearby, more honey in bee boxes.

Fireflies

Can't be attacked
Loot: ()

Tips:
1. They are mainly used to make a miner hat.

Frog

Aggressive
Health: 100
Damage: 10
Loot:
Spawns from

Tips:
1. I don't recommend new players to hunt frogs.
2. Frogs can be trapped by .

Gobbler

Passive
Health: 50
Loot: *2
Spawns from

Tips:
1. Hunting method: Gobblers will eat most vegetable and fruit foodstuffs (like Carrots, Corn, or Berries) left on the ground. When placed nearby a Gobbler, they will slowly walk to the foodstuff and consume it while completely ignoring the character. At this moment, you can approach to attack them.
Animals - part 2
Koalefant

Health: 500 * 2
500 in DS, 1000 in DST
Loot: /,*8, (periodic)

Tips:
1. Hunting method: Koalefant can be cornered for hunting so that it can't move. Then attack it, run out, run in, hit it for 6 times(if you find it hard, you can try hitting for 5 times or less), then run out again. repeat this.
2. Koalefant tracks can be found by investigating a Suspicious Dirt Pile. These can be found randomly in the world and change locations if ignored for a while.
3. Suspicious Dirt Pile can also lead to Varg and Spat.

Mosquito

Aggresive
Health: 100
Attack: 3
Loot: , ()

Tips:
1. Just ignore them.

Pengull

Neutral
Health: 150

2. They will appear when you walk around the sea in Winter.

Pig

Neutral
Health: 250
Damage: 33
Loot: 75% 25%
Spawns from

Tips:
1. It is not wise to attack pigs.
2. Feeding a pig any Meats, Eggs or food based on meat will cause the pig to follow and help the player.
3. Pigs can be employed to chop down Trees.
4. Feeding a pig 4 Monster Meats will turn it into a were pig. It's better to kill a were pig than to kill a normal pig because you can get more.

Pig Guardian

Aggressive
Health: 300 * 2
300 in DS, 600 in DST
Damage: 33
Loot: 75% 25%
Spawns from

Tips:
1. Just leave them away if you are new to this game.

Werepig

Aggressive
Health: 350 * 1.5
350 in DS, 525 in DST
Damage: 40
Loot: *2,

Tips:
1. Hunting method: run in, hit twice, run out, repeat this.
2. If with enough Monster Foods, more resources can be gained by killing Werepigs instead of Pigs. It's the best way to get Pigskin. Pigskin can make Football Helmet and Ham Bat.
3. A Werepig can be used to convert stacks of Petals or other unwanted Vegetables to Manure as it will eat through a whole stack in one sitting without chasing anything.

Tallbird

Aggressive
Health: 400 * 2
400 in DS, 800 in DST
Damage: 50
Loot: *2, if there is.
Spawns from

Tips:
1. Hunting method: run in, hit twice, run out, repeat this.
2. Tallbird eggs can be hatched by players.
Monsters - part 1
Monsters are all aggressive.

Charlie(Night Monster)

Damage: 100
Can't be killed

Tips:
1. She only attacks when the character is in complete darkness, unable to see.
2. Never leave yourself in complete darkness. You need to make a fire pit or torch at night.

Clockwork Bishop

Health: 300 * 3
300 in DS, 900 in DST
Damage: 40
Loot: *2,

Tips:
1. The Bishop is a moderately strong ranged mob, usually very accurate, so it is recommended to be armored and armed for a battle with one.
2. You can employ some pigs to fight for you.
3. Don't try to kill it without armor. It will be dangerous.

Clockwork Knight

Health: 300 * 3
300 in DS, 900 in DST
Damage: 40
Loot: *2

Tips:
1. Run in, hit twice, run out, repeat this. Skilled player can kill it without hurt.
2. If you are host, it's your job to kill this for gears. We need gears to make Iceboxes.

Clockwork Rook

Health: 300 * 3

Damage: 45
Loot: *2

Tips:
1. It is dangerous. Don't try to kill it without armor.
2. You can make use of it to chop trees. Take care of yourself.

Deerclops

Health: 2000 * 2
2000 in DS, 4000 in DST
Damage: 75
Loot:*8,

Tips:
1. It is super dangerous. The good news is that in default settings Deerclops won't come.
2. Deerclops is a boss monster that is only active during Winter, unless edited by the World Generation Options Screen. It has high health and damage, and it can also destroy Structures (the same way a Hammer does) and knock down trees much like a Clockwork Rook does.
3. Deerclops is very aggressive towards anything it encounters and can kill most other creatures. Its monstrous appearance drains Sanity when the character gets too close.
4. Only host can kill it without lagging: run in, hit twice, run out with Walking Cane, repeat this.
Need a lot of practice.
5. Dearclops Eyeball can not make anything in current DST version. So I think there is no need to change settings to make it come.

Ewecus

Health: 800
Damage: 60
Loot: *4, *2-3, *1-2

Tips:
1. The Ewecus has a 50% chance to spawn at the end of a series of suspicious dirt piles instead of a Varg.
2. Ewecus is a portmanteau of the words "ewe", a female sheep, and "mucus".
3. Don't hunt it alone.

Ghost

Health: 200

Tips:
1. Stay away from them. They have no value.

1. Hounds' number only depends on how long you have been playing in the server. For example, I host a server and spend 20 days while my friend only spend 10 days here. 3 to 4 hounds will aim at me while other 2 hounds will aim at him.
2. You can find help from Beefalo and Pig for fighting hounds.
3. Run in, hit twice, run out, repeat this.
4. Tooth trap is the best solution to Hounds attack.

Red Hound

Health: 100
Damage: 30
Loot: , , , 20%

Tips:
1. Never kill it at base camp. It will cause a fire.

Blue Hound

Health: 100

You can refer to Hound.

Krampus

Health: 200 * 1.5
200 in DS, 300 in DST
Damage: 50
Loot: , *2, 1%

Tips:
1. I don't plan to introduce the attribute Naughtiness here. When you kill enough animals, Krampus will appear and steal your stuff. You can click here[dont-starve-game.wikia.com] for more information.
2. Krampus sack is awesome.

Monsters - part 2
MacTusk(Walrus Father)

Health: 150 * 2
150 in DS, 300 in DST
Damage: 33
Loot: , , 50%, 25%

Tips:
1. Both walrus tusk and walrus hat are important to the game. Tusk can make walking cane and walrus hat can provide warmness and increasing sanity.
2. It is your main job to hunt walrus in winter. MacTusk will respawn every 3 days after being killed.
3. Hunting method:
Method 1-
You'd better not hunt him alone. Go with your friends and take your armor. First kill the 2 blue hounds, then keep chasing MacTusk until he turns back. MacTask can be stunned by your following attack.
Method 2-
Take Ice Stuff with you. MacTusk takes 2 blasts from the Ice Staff to be frozen. First kill hounds, then MacTusk.
Method 3-
Employ several pigs to fight for you.
4. Don't kill walrus son.

Merm

Health: 250 * 2
250 in DS, 500 in DST

Loot: ,
Spawns from

Tips:
1. You don't need to attack them.

Shadow Creature
Crawling Horror

Health: 300
Damage: 20
Terror Beak

Health: 400
Damage: 50
Loot: 150%

Tips:
1. Shadow Creatures are hostile mobs that begin to attack the player when the player becomes insane (Sanity ≤ 15%). Take care of your Sanity.
2. Run in, hit once, run out, repeat this.
3. Killing them is the main way to get nightmare fuels in DST.

Spider
Normal/Warrior

Health: 100/200 * 2
Spider Warrior 200 in DS, 400 in DST
Damage: 20
Loot: 50% 25% 25%
Spawns from (Tier 1/2/3)

Tier 1/2/3 Spider Den

Tips:
1. Spiders can be stunned so you can keep attack one without hurt.
2. When there are lots of spiders aiming at you, run in, hit the closest one, run out, repeat this.
3. It may be dangerous for you to attack spiders at dust or at night, unless you are Wendy and you have summoned Abigail.
4. can catch spiders.
5. Don't attack spiders on spider den(Tier 2 and Tier 3) area. There will be Spider Warriors if you do so.
6. Spider Warriors are able to jump at you from a distance. Their attack can be avoided by your steps.(I don't know how to express it precisely)

Spider Queen

Health: 1250 * 2
1250 in DS, 2500 in DST
Damage: 80
Loot: *4, *4, ,
Spawns from (Tier 3 with chance)

Tips:
1. The Queen is slow, so it is possible to attack her in the pauses between attacks. Always kill the hatched Spiders/Spider Warriors, though, before attempting to attack the Queen again. As always, good armor and weapons help a lot. If fighting without armor, having a couple of traps set around to kill the spawned spiders is a good idea.
2. Kiting: run in, hit 3 or 4 times, run out, repeat this.
3. Destroy Tier 3 spider den in advance in case that it turn into Spider Queen which is hard to fight.
4. You can plant spider den with spider eggs near base camp to get Monster Meat/Silk/Gland every day. It will be helpful especially in winter.

Tentacle

Health: 500
Damage: 34
Loot: *2, 50%, 20%
Spawns from Marsh

Tips:
1. When the player or mob gets close enough to the spawn area of a Tentacle, bubbles will appear on the ground. Then they will appear as a purple spotted tentacles spiked at the tip, which will emit growls and come out of the ground to attack anything that comes close enough.
2. Tentacles can't move. Hunting method: run in, hit once, run out, repeat this.
3. It is dangerous for new players to walk into marsh without armor because there maybe hidden tentacles.
4. Merms, Spiders and Tentacles will fight with each other. You can just watch them fight and take away the loots.

Tree Guard

Neutral if you don't chop trees.
Health: 2000 * 1.5
1400, 2000 and 2500 of different size in DS, 3000 in DST
Damage: 50
Loot: , *6
Spawns from

Tips:
1. Treeguards are Boss Monsters that can occasionally transform from Evergreens when a nearby Evergreen is chopped down.
2. They can be calmed down by planting trees.
3. Hunting method: run in, hit 3 or 4 times, run out, repeat this.

Varg

Health: 600
Damage: 50
Loot: *1-3, *4-6

Tips:
1. When tracking a Koalefant, there is a chance for the Varg to be tracked down instead. This chance starts at 5% on day one, and gradually increases to 33% chance on day 100. The player is unable to tell which animal will be at the end of the tracks before encountering it.
2. Varg can summon all kinds of Hounds.
3. Hunting method: keep attacking it with armor. No moving.
Food
You can cook advanced food with Crock Pot.

Mission sequence
0. Explore and Gather
You need cutgrass, twigs, flints, gold, rocks, logs and other useful materials. Berries, seeds and butterfly wings are main food at start. You need campfire or torches to survive the night. Otherwise, you will be attacked by Charlie.

Select a good place to set base camp.
I offer several choices for you.

  • New Player: Yellow grassland with rabbits and Beefalo neaby(Beefalo not too close in case that they are in heat). You can catch rabbits with Trap to get Morsel. Then you can transplant some berry bushes. one morsel + 3 berries in Crock pot = 1 meatball. 3 meatballs for 2 days, then you will be full.
  • Skilled Player: pig village with Pig King. There are usually enough spider dens nearby. You can get monster meat easily and then turn them into meat and pigskin.
  • Pro Player: Taking walrus houses, Beefalo, pig village and marsh into account, set the base near center of the map. You can go anywhere easily.

1. Make Camp
You need
(Tier 0)
so that you don't need make campfire any more,

(Tier 0)
to prototype Tier 1 science items,

then
(Tier 1)
to protoype Tier 2 science items,

(Tier 1)
to make advanced food,

(Tier 2)
to store and preserve Food, reducing spoilage rate by 50% ,

(Tier 2)
to convert monster meat to eggs and for other usage.(Refer to Birds)

(Tier 1)
so that your base won't catch fire by lightning.

2. Drying Rack and Transplant Plants
I highly recommend Drying Rack
(Tier 1)
You can put meat on it to get jerky after 2 days which can provide 25 Hunger, 20 Health, and 15 Sanity. To me, it's the best food.

Use shovel to dug grass, saplings and berry bushes, then plant them near base camp.
Grass and berry bushes need poop to irrigate.

3. Optional
(Tier 1)
Honey is great food and takes long time to spoil.
Honey can be further used to make advanced food.

(Tier 2)
Never build basic farms.

For Monster Meat, Silk, Spider Gland

(Tier 2)
4 Monster Meat for 2 Meat and 1 Pigskin as I mentioned.

4. Prepare for Winter
Winter is coming!(By the way, I love a song of ice and fire)

Beefalo Hat is one of the best warm clothing. It can increase the time a character can be without a heat source during the Winter before Freezing.
You may also need Thermal Stone.

While having a charge, it emits warmth and delays the moment a character starts to freeze. It provides a maximum amount of 120 points of insulation.

Both can be repaired with Sewing Kit.

5. Winter has come
Hunt walruses every 3 day.
Plant trees and chop trees.

6. Another Year
Congratulations for survival!
Do anything you like.
Mods recommended
1. Geometric Placement
Snaps objects to a grid when placing and displays a build grid around it.
This is my favourite. I can't play DS or DST without it.

2. DST Where is My Beefalo?
Show lots of items on map. Useful.

3. Minimap Hud
World time won't stop if you use key "m" to check map, so this mod is quite helpful.
Other
I would like to say
FEZ is one of my favourite game. One guide for FEZ has title as You Need Help, Not Answers!. I really love this title.

In DST, deaths may be annoying, but it is part of this survival game.
Never lose hope, never give up, you will find your own answers.

Life itself is the same.

You forgot to warn people that on day 30, a deerclops comes. I would reccomend that you make a low tier base and then kill him by kiting.

High damage is awesome. But if you are new to this game, I still don't recommend him.

The only advantage is high damage. However, lagging will destroy you.

sure, -25*2, then Gobblers die.:ccskull:

Another good strategy for hunting Gobblers is to gather red mushrooms. When you see a Gobbler, just put them on the ground, and it'll walk over to eat them. After eating a couple, it'll die from the health debuff.

"Life itself is the same." except the deaths part. That would be nice but scary at the same time.
