Tinkerer's Lab InsaneHC Survival - FPS-friendly Setup
By NoVa
Heyo fellow Defenders!

I decided to share some of my experiences I gathered throughout my countless Tinker survival runs with you.
Many times I've encountered different builds for this map that were unplayable due to the huge framerate drops they were causing. Based on this fact, I took some time and put together this hopefully useful setup that will improve your gameplay and performance during the whole survival session.

Note:
With the recent patch v8.00 from 9/16/15 where Tinkerer's Lab has been optimized for better performance, the main point of this guide has been unfortunately eliminated. However, the build with the heroes and stats listed below is still functioning without the need to modify size of auras in the build itself. I don't plan on editing the build overview, so please keep that in mind, it shall be left here for historical purposes.
Heroes
Before I jump into the actual build, let me show you the Heroes I used for this build (in order of defences placement). One of my main goals was to make a functional build using fairly and easily achievable stats. That's why I used only myth-geared heroes limited at lvl 74s.

Tower Initiate (74)

Tower EV (30)

note: this hero is more for a show off than for an actual guide, but I still managed to achieve victory with these low stats; although I highly recommend to use higher tower hp stat for better resistance boost and wall beam HP

Tower Summoner (74)

Tower Countess (74)

Tower Huntress (74)

Upgrader & Support Jester (74)

note: I've put emphasis on high Wheel O' Fortuna stats, actually capping this ability, rolling wheel was all the damage I was doing to the mobs during the whole session if I discount some minor damage from milking mana

One fact: with 3726 WoF, you deal 50% damage when rolling 3x swords, and heal 75% of both hero and defences HP when rolling 3x potion

Some of the key-targets that I wanted to achieve for this build were:

* use fairly low and achievable hero stats
* use the least amount of Auras as possible
* minimum DPS support during the whole session
* hold up to 6 heroes in last wave
* achieve 30+ FPS for non-host players
Build
Now let's move to the build itself. For better orientation in the whole map, I divided the build into 5 sections, as shown on picture below.

South-East

All the placement of defences should be clearly visible, but just to make sure I'll list it below:
  • 70% aura stack (you lower aura size my pressing 'minus' (-) button; 10% each press)
  • 4 DU buff beam
  • 3x archer, 1x spider, 1x mage, 1x harpoon, 1x proxi trap
  • 1x orc, 1x archer minions on the left side of the crystal
On a few places of this build I used stacked-minions technique. If you don't know how to do so, be sure to check wat's instruction video.

North-East

  • 60% Ensnare, 80% Electric+Strength Drain auras
  • 6 DU buff beam
  • 6x archer, 1x spider, 1x mage, 1x harpoon
  • 2 DU + 3DU + 4DU wall beams
  • 1x proxi trap

West

  • 40% Ensnare, 70% Electric+Strength Drain auras
  • 6 DU buff beam
  • 3x archer, 1x mage, 1x harpoon
  • 1x proxi trap

Center West

  • 70% Electric+Strength Drain auras
  • 4 DU buff beam, 2 DU wall beam
  • 3x archer, 1x spider, 1x mage, 1x harpoon
  • 1x proxi trap

Center East

  • 70% Electric+Strength Drain auras
  • 5 DU buff beam, 5 DU wall beam
  • 5x archer, 1x spider, 1x mage, 1x harpoon
  • 1x proxi trap
At the end of the build you should end up with both DU & MU at 145/145.

Few notes:
  • after you build the whole setup and before you start the session be sure to upgrade every buff beam to 3 stars (there should be enough mana on wave 28* for all of them); also upgrade few times Strength Drain auras in both central areas
  • when upgrading start with the center areas, most of the Ogres go right towards them
  • for the first half of the waves be sure to roll Damage All Enemies (3x sword); for second half of the waves just roll once Heal Allies (3x potion)**
  • once you're done with upgrading, seek some safe spot where you can easily focus on rolling wheel for the rest of the session (my personal 2 spots are: one at the very north part of the map on conveyor belt, second is on a rock by chest at the very west)

* nowadays you can begin your survival session at wave 32, saving you a lot of time
** adjust depending on the current situation
Additional Options
To further increase your FPS you can achieve by simply changing few settings in your Options. The changes are following:

Game launcher
Before you even boot up the game, there is a little Launcher menu. To access Options there you simple click CONFIGURE in the bottom right. (in case you have the option to display disabled, the other way is through your local game files in C:\...\Dungeon Defenders\Binaries\DunDefConfig.exe) In this menu you can change your Graphics Quality.
  • Launcher menu -> CONFIGURE -> GFX / SOUND -> Graphics Quality -> Low

Ingame Options
Any additional settings changes can be done any time in game or in game menus. Those changes are following:
  • Options -> General
    ▶ Disable Damage Numbers
    ▶ Disable Damage Flashes
    ▶ Disable Camera Shake

  • Options -> Video
    ▶ Disable Postprocessing
Few words at the end
  • Some tips & tricks to this setup were used from pew pew pew and asas2007, big thanks to them.
  • Big thanks as well to miss jemmajule for grammar & spelling checking, you're awesome! ♥
  • Last thanks to all "test subjects" that assisted me during the whole process of making this build.
  • Feel free to check DDFRBR group where many nice and helpful Defenders play DD daily and where you can also find me in the group chat.
  • And also feel free to take a look at my other guides.

If this guide was useful or helpful for you, you can express your thanks by leaving feedback or ranking, both would be highly appreciated.
For the record, this is my very first individual public guide released.
Good luck with defending Etheria and RNG with rewards!

Regards,
NoVa

In middle, interesting. There should be no copters getting that far to drop ogres there. Next time you do it pay closer attention to that area. And maybe one possible solution - put the wall in center-east further from your minion stack or vise versa and let me know how it went.

it actually may not have been a drop from a copter, I'm starting to think he either snuck by the center west wall, or the center east minion wall. Not sure why he wasn't aggroed though.
Cyrax 3 Jul, 2015 @ 6:38am
It was the middle crystal that the ogre got by, and yea rolling heal allies works well.

@Cyrax
Have you noticed by which crystal you had the ogre drop? I've got mentioned few times about something similar happening, so we might figure out some solution for it. And to regard you center-west wall issue, the only enemy that should be able to reach it would be ogres, which should be aggroed by the nearby harpoon and not actually attack the wall, but that's no always guaranteed. Just be sure to roll Heal Allies several times during wave and you shouldn't have much troubles.
And also, thank you for the feedback, much appreciated. :remedy:

This worked amazingly until the very last wave. An ogre got dropped right by the crystal and smacked it once for an instant loss. :( Also noticed that the wall at center west goes down once I hit wave 32+. My wall health stat is only 4k so that's probably why but If I could save 1 DU, I could put a reflect there and possibly save it.

Well, you're right its works perfectly on insane hardcore chicken is not different than NMHC. The only thing its way too easy for me with my defense to do it, I was upgrading then sitting there waiting for the end, I like the fight but for farming chicken its awesome. Thanks for sharing that.
