DESCRIPTION

Predating all the currently marketed ships, The Wolf class Patrol Boat was originally created by Tristavian Shipyards during the first blueprint trials which eventually led to the larger Kinabalu Frigate. The prototypes were left half-finished alongside one of the minor shipyard facilities hired by TVSI during its founding. With mounting delays to the upcoming fleet command carrier a small number of engineers were redirected to look over abandoned prototypes for possible adaptation. The original 'wings' of the Wolf were replaced and recent advances in Piston and Battery technologies allowed engineers to get round several previous design issues. The previously poorly planned engineering was also stripped and replaced, along with the weapon systems. Two variants were released in 2083 for the open market.

Wolf-M: The baseline military model, the Wolf-M is a fast attack craft bridging the gap between fighters and true capital ships. The Wolf can support a crew of 4 for short periods of time but is designed for operations within a fleet or from a base. The M-variant carries two under-wing hardpoints which by default have Gatling turrets installed and a twin pair of rocket launchers give the Wolf some ability to punch holes into larger craft. Like most patrol craft the Wolf is extremely lightly armoured and relies on agility for survival. A shared-storage of 5 connected small containers allows the craft to be loaded with ammunition for combat, additional fuel for extended patrols or general light cargo handling. A piston-extended connector allows the craft to dock (main engines should be turned off during such procedures or warranty invalid). Despite the name the M-variant is expected to see only limited use in militaries where such small craft are often too vulnerable in modern engagements however multiple orders have already been received from private security firms and police forces looking for a craft with enough bite to see off pirate raiders and seize illegal cargos.

Wolf-R: The recon variant of the Wolf is designed for stealth operations behind enemy lines and contains the latest in Communications/detection equipment at the expenses of being entirely disarmed. Externally the R-variant replaces the under-wing weaponry with communications equipment and uses the latest advances in stealthed hulls. Internally the darkened bridge has a larger viewing port. The consoles for communications and ship systems are now located in the central compartment along with the crew accommodation (designed for longer duration missions). All ammunition and cargo storage has been stripped out from engineering and replaced with additional batteries, allowing the vessel to turn off its reactors and 'run silent' for extended periods of time.

Rev 1: In 2087 a small update standardized the control and navigation lighting of both variants to the agreed TVSI standard of the time. Having joined the Phoenix Republic, the Raven is re branded as the Wolf to avoid confusion with the PFS Raven Frigate.

Rev 2: In 2093 both variants underwent 10 year refits, though relatively little was changed from the original plans. Additional crew facilities were installed along with laser antenna for covert communications.

Rev 3: In 2102 with the design nearing the two decade mark and the Komodo reaching the prototyping phase, TVSI chose to undergo a larger refit on the small number of remaining Wolves operating within the Republic fleets. Large changes to the engine room saw increased power, dedicated ammo storage (M variant) and most importantly full life support and jump capabilities.

UNIVERSE LORE

The gray wolf or grey wolf (Canis lupus) also known as the timber wolf, or western wolf, is a canid native to the wilderness and remote areas of North America and Eurasia. It is the largest extant member of its family. Like the red wolf, it is distinguished from other Canis species by its larger size and less pointed features, particularly on the ears and muzzle. Its winter fur is long and bushy, and predominantly a mottled grey in color, although nearly pure white, red, or brown to black also occur. As of 2077, 6 subspecies of C. lupus are recognised by MSW3.

The grey wolf and mankind have long had an uneasy relationship. A competitor during the hunter-gatherer eras and a nuisance to farming further on, wolves throughout the centuries were gradually pushed further from civilization and in many cases became extinct across large areas of the planet. Throughout the 20th Century and into the 21st, conservation efforts kept the populations stable in remote areas such as Canada and Siberia.

The devastating climate changes over the last few decades have seen much of the Northern Hemisphere abandoned to arctic wilderness. As many species in the areas have waned, the grey wolf has seen a surprising resurgence. Harsh living conditions in the wilderness along with extremely seasonal food supplies have further hardened the specie. Opportunistic attacks on humans still living in these remote areas have become common place with large packs known to take down armed men.

Travel advice for wolf inhabited areas recommends travelling in groups at all times, especially during winter and spring when low food supplies and breeding increase the likelihood of attacks. All on-foot travel by night is strongly discouraged year round. Unusually for Earth’s stringent environmental protection laws, it is permissible to kill a grey wolf in any circumstance of self-defence or defence of livestock (though intentional hunting remains outlawed).
