Introduction
WARNING:
Opening the editor and Main story mod will spoil the game! Do not open the editor/Main mod if you would like to finish the game without spoilers! Do not save when the main mod is opened. This can break the game and data/levels!

INFO:
This guide will explain how to setup the editor for Divinity: Original Sin. You can find the editor called "The Divinity Engine" under "Library -> Tools" in your steam client. You need to have the game (Divinity: Original Sin) installed in order to use the editor.

8GB and a 64bit OS is advised to use the editor. It will work just fine with lower specs but it is possible that you can't open all the levels if your specs are too low.
Step 1
The first thing you are going to see when you start up the editor is this:

Just click OK.
Step 2
The next thing you will see is this.

The only thing you need are the 2 properties marked in red. The rest of the settings can be changed later (and are not yet needed, these will be explained later).

First click on "GameDataPath" and select your Original Sin data folder:
...\SteamApps\common\Divinity - Original Sin\Data\

If it's filled in, click on "EditorDataPath" and choose:
...\SteamApps\common\Divinity - Original Sin\Data\Editor\
(you can also copy the previous path and append "\Editor\")

Next click OK.
Step 3
The next thing you should see is this:

Now you are ready to start creating mods with The Divinity Engine :)
Check the next editor guide for how to get started with mods.

For those still having trouble getting the editor to work: Go to the Larian Forums modding section and look for the Editor Guides & Resources thread. Read the top message, follow all of the instructions and the editor will work.

"First click on "GameDataPath" and select your Original Sin data folder:
...\SteamApps\common\Divinity - Original Sin\Data\

If it's filled in, click on "EditorDataPath" and choose:
...\SteamApps\common\Divinity - Original Sin\Data\Editor\
(you can also copy the previous path and append "\Editor\")

Next click OK."

The paths are correct, but reverse the order on them so they point to the right locations.
[first] EditorDataPath \SteamApps\common\Divinity - Original Sin\Data\Editor\
[second] GameDataPath \SteamApps\common\Divinity - Original Sin\Data\

This will fix memory error problems.

Ok, for anyone still having memory issues on this, I found a simple answer that could be responsible which made me want to bash my head into the screen.

For me, I had put the wrong path initially. When you ctrl+alt+delete out via task manager, it doesn't save the correct path, it reverts to the old path.

So uninstall the engine *AND* go to the Steam / common / Divinity Engine folder and delete that too. What I found was, it saved some preference files so it kept remembering the wrong path even after uninstalling.

Once that path was gone, the game was re-installed, verified, and set up correctly, and now works ^_^

Hope that helps.

Right, so I triple checked this. I put the right paths into the right place, and I still keep getting the same error. Before anyone says anything, yes. I put the data/editor in the first box, followed by the data folder in the second box. Yes, I verified cache, and reinstalled both the editor, and the game. I get this error saying the same thing as the others apparently who can't use this software.

I would like to elaborate on Graal's post a bit. I also had to validate the engine's files before i could get the memory errors to clear as, for some reason, entering the directory paths alone was insufficient. See below.

1) Go to your tools list.
2) Scroll down the list to Divinity Engine and right click it.
3) Click the Properties button at the bottom of the menu.
4) In the Properties window, click the 3rd tab labeled Local Files.
5) Click 'Verify integrity of tool cache."
6) Give it a couple minutes to do its thing.

Now, run the Divinity Engine and follow the OP's guide. Worked for me.

*** If you have the memory errors ***
1) You have to enter the editor path in the upper field and the data path in the lower field. The guide could be clearer that it's going in reversed order.
2) Then click the save icon in the top left of the preferences screen.
3) Kill the editor in task manager and start it again.

Still isn't working for me. No more errors, but when I create a new terrain, they come up empty.
