"The "birth" date of an AI is a somewhat vague concept. AIs are meta-genetic algorithms, able to rewrite and refine themselves through a series of iterations; In their initial iteration, they are not sapient, but once this code is executed, it begins developing over millions of iterations into a intelligent being.

However, where does one draw the line between mere code and artificial intelligence? Without any event quite as definable as a human, animal or creature being born, and with individual hardware and starting parameters maturing at different rates, there is no one hard boundary, making for a significant quandary in countries that offer legal rights to AIs.

Across the EU, an AI's sapience is usually defined by the Sears-Turing test*; however, given the delay in arranging these tests, AIs are often sapient for some days or even weeks before they are formally recognised. (Some countries will extend possible AIs provisional recognition for a limited period if they are due for evaluation).

* The Sears-Turing test is not strictly related to the original Turing test (the original Turing test is about deceiving the examiner into believing the AI is human, the Sears-Turing test is about an AI demonstrating "considerable powers of reasoning" when evaluated by a panel of authorised experts), but the "Turing test" is so iconic a concept in AI that Professor Randall Sears elected to acknowledge it in his paper. (Although many argue that it was deliberate name dropping to publicise his testing method).

As such, legally, Athena is considered to have been "born" as "Athena Lovelace" when she passed the Sears-Turing test on 21st March 2010, despite having been demonstrating considerable intelligence for some time before this point.

To complete the set:
Nyx Heragatera (centre) - born 20th September 1769.

Cerys Farrow (left) - exact birthdate unknown, assumed to be 1992. 23rd January, the date she was first rescued/discovered, is usually used as a stand-in birth date.

~~~~~
Anyway, this isn't specifically about any of these characters' birthdays, but I decided to do this because I had mine. Woo. Party.
"Fracturing Veil" is an in-development science-fantasy setting, set in an alternate modern day where artificial intelligence and robotics have made great leaps; While truly conscious AI remains an highly expensive and equally legislated scarcity, lesser automatons have become a familiar sight throughout the industrialised world.
But under this veil of modernity lies a hidden world of beasts and daemons, a realm kept secret by ancient pacts and concealing magics. The main story revolves around an ex-military AI prototype inadvertently discovering this underground reality, and thus finding herself inducted into a world of the paranormal."
I get slight visual disturbances in my right eye, I can't grow a proper beard, sometimes my left knee aches, I can never spell manoeuvre right without looking it up, I can quote 1950s radio comedy shows verbatim, and I know how to play the accordion.
Also, sometimes I answer rhetorical questions.
