The initial criteria for the Valkyr dropship was to be able to carry a heavy armored vehicle in planetary gravity, and be able to get into orbit with it's carriage in a single-stage flight.
To save weight, Delta Corp engineers decided to use two Mk3 atmospheric thrusters which could be rotated. These engines are helping the Valkyr to slow down when entering the atmosphere, while in vertical state they are used to get into orbit. The vector thrust is achieved by Whiplash industries' thrust control system.

To cut down uranium refueling costs, the original plan was to design an Ion-Atmo hybrid, but the first tests quickly proved that the ship was be unable to escape planetary gravity with it's large battery array and heavy cargo. To achieve the optimal weight / power output ratio, it was necessary to drop the all-energy layout; instead, two large hydrogen thrusters were installed on the back of the ship, which turned to be a good decision.
Three hydrogen tanks are keeping each engine up and running, with enough fuel to take multiple turns into orbit with one reload. To save fuel, the hydrogen stage is used only in the ascending phase.

In order to save weight, the Valkyr has no turrets equipped, therefore it is an easy target for enemy pilots. To mitigate risks, the Valkyrs are rarely deployed in front-line missions; if there's no other option, an escort squadron is usually assigned.

The Valkyr is operated by a team of two pilots; the commander, sitting in the rear cockpit, is generally responsible to fly the craft, handle the different engine systems, and retrieve or deploy the payload. In the front seat, the co-pilot handles all the auxiliary systems, including communication and electronic components as well as the drop-actuators. In the ascending stage, the co-pilot can also help the commander to fine-tune the engines' power output, keeping the energy- and fuel consumption at optimal rate.

The ship has two different actuator systems for cargo: the retractable maglock gear is used to quickly grab the vehicle from the ground, and pull it back to the cargo area, while the foldable arm is generally used to keep in place and lock all vehicles with standard connector modules.
