The real reason why Smithys Anvil is no more.
Kaijin messaged me the reason why Majere recently pulled customs from being posted.

I have removed him from the group and am pissed off to a high degree that some one can do this to a community.

The text below is from Kaijin himself:

I've been silent about this subject, but now that the rating system has been implemented for some weeks, I'll express my feelings about it and about the donations/hosting costs/dev costs.

Let's start for the hosting service.... I've checked where the site is hosted, http://www.hostdime.com/business-hosting/, and I assume the plan you signed up for was sHD3.
I've contacted them and they told me that all the information in the website is correct, which means we have unlimited Bandwidth, unlimited SSD RAID10 Disk Space, Unlimited Domains Hosted, and the list of unlimited's goes on and on. I've also asked them how many users could the site handle at the same time and they told me 500, which we never reached that number. This plan costs 329.45$/year.

This means that I find very confusing how can the hoster "complaints the usage of mysql being too high"? Can you post the email you received?
Don't take this personally, but when there are 400 donors, even with an estimate of 20$ per donator, that's 8.000$ and I'm absolutely sure this is a very low estimate.
As far as not having statistics about the donations, I've been working with paypal for years and I know it's possible to issue a monthly report, so I'm sorry to tell you that's now true. You have to know how much we've received so far and where the money went to.

So, even if the hosting costs were 500 a year, for 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015 there would be 2.000$ of expenses..... that would still leave 6.000$ available.
Then there's something that confuses me a lot.
I've made a whois query to the smithy's domain and this is what I received in return

Why is all the information fake?
I've ran more than 1 forum as admin and when I bought domain names and hosting, I've always used my real details, specially since these type of transactions are made via PayPal/Visa, where you need to fill with real information, otherwise how can you receive invoices of the services we've been paying for in the last 3 years?
And I ask you kindly, that in your reply you don't just write text, cause that proves nothing. I would like to see links, invoices, and as far as Paypal, it even allows to download monthly reports with just numbers, no confidential information is shown.
I didn't want to suspect misuse of the donations, but due to your lack of transparency, you must realize it's illogical if I didn't do it so, it would be very naive of me.
Maybe it's because I've admin several forums over the years, and I know all the processes involved and the costs related.

Then we have the hired dev, that, again, I'm sorry for my honesty, didn't do a good job, not even close. The system was installed in a very early stage, with lots of bugs (and I still receive complaints from members), no filters when it comes to sorting, even with 75 threads per page, it's nearly impossible to search for a custom between the letters F and T, since we can only navigate 2 pages at a time. The problems reported take a lot of time to be fixed for someone who's being paid and speaking of which, how much is he charging? Was it a 1 time payment? Is he receiving a monthly fee?
Considering the amount of members we have on the forum and that have offered help many times before, I'm sure we could have got the job done by someone that would use what they were programming, in other words, we would have a kick-ass system and without paying anything, since all the help offers I've seen were always free of charge. This is something I couldn't never find a logical reason to be happening.
As for the hired dev, I would also like to see an invoice, since a legit and good dev will be able to provide proof of costs.
Kaijin: So, even if the dev charged us 500$ (which would be a total rip-off), we would still have +5.000$.
You can see how I find very disturbing reading that we just have -10x the amount of money that we should have.

Another issue that has been troubling is the use of fluxBB. Why do we have 1 of the worst php languages? phpBB3 is much better (I speak for self-experience), most of the complaints and issues I see on our forum wouldn't happen with phpBB, but with flux, it is very limited. We just need to look at the amount of mods (modifications) that are available.... fluxBB has around 100-150, phpBB has more than 600, just on the phpBB3 official site, since there are many other mods on outside sources.
All the problems you've posted so far about server loading are due to software limitations, not hosting, so, why keep changing hosting plans, and now a COLO server, which is used for BIG websites with thousands of daily visits.... how do the other forums with much higher number of registered members be able to have a hosting plan that is not even close to what we have atm?
Changing php language should solve all the problems the site has been having and the migration wouldn't be very difficult to do, I've done it in the past in forums with higher registered members (50.000) than ours and nothing is lost and it's even a fast process to do.

Last, we have +30.000 members. We have 3 active mods, papillon, raynebc and me "watching" the whole forum. That's 10.000 members per mod.... don't you think we need more mods?
In forums I'm admin/mod, just 1 example, we have +64.000 members and we have more than 20 mods, distributed by the several sections of the forum.
Since all of us are doing this in our spare time and we don't receive any payment, again, I can't find any logical reason not to have more mods. I consider is extremely important to have at least 10-15 mods, there's no other way to "watch" the forum with a number below that.

I'm not expecting a reply, since all the other posts I've made direct questions
