Can't launch my games
I've never had this problem before, and it's been happening since yesterday. My games start up, get to the main menu and then crash. I've tried opening it with -autoconfig in the launch options, and that worked, but as soon as I change my graphics settings back to normal (1600x1080) my game immediately crashes again.

This seems to be happening with all my games, and I have a growing suspion that my graphics card might be going on me, but I'm curious if anyone else might be able to give me a solution.

*Specs*

Windows 8.1 (64-bit)
AMD A4-5000 APU with Radeon Graphics 1.50 GHz
4GB of ram

(And yes, I'm aware that this laptop isn't really meant for gaming)

If anyone can give me any info on what I should do, it'd be really appreciated.

Update: I installed another ram card, to see if that may solve/help with the issue. Nothing, though I suspected it wouldn't. Computer needed a new one anyway. I tried also uninstalling and reinstalling a few games, Gmod and TF2 to be exact. Neither will launch.

Tried installing the latest drivers, didn't do anything. :/
Also... -autoconfig stopped working altogether. Nothing wants to launch at all.

Another update: I uninstalled and reinstalled Steam. Still nothing.

Check for problematic software that you may have, especially antivirus programs and antispyware programs. Not everything may be listed, so check all background applications that run when you game, as they can be suspect.

Disabling background applications here...

Pay no attention to the fact that you may have had any software installed for a long time without the problem. Just troubleshoot the problem in a step by step manner.

Checked through all my background applications, couldn't find any that were listed, but tried ending any that were uneeded. Still didn't change anything, games still refuse to launch. :/

So just to clarify, you don't see ANY error messages, as the games just crash or end without any warning after you actually start them up and just before the game menus or other intro scenes in the game ?

What is your antivirus program on that computer, please ?

No error messages, nothing. The game just closes immediately after getting to the main menu. The load is normal, showing the regular Valve intro along with the Source logo, it then flashes the main menu then closes.

As for antivirus programs, I just have Windows Defender. I know it's not much, but I personally can't afford a good antivirus and I don't really trust other free ones, as they're often fairly sketchy.

Let us pick one game that you have and use that to troubleshoot with. Make sure you pick a game that your computer will run well or should run well, since it is a bit of a low end computer for gaming, as you said (not being rude but for testing only, you see)

Post the name of that game in your next reply that you choose. Please pick an "easy" game that you have this same problem with...the crashes that is.

Are you absolutely sure all your drivers are fully up to date and Windows as well is up to date itself ?

Try this but do it exactly as suggested, making sure you perform all the steps, including running as admin.

Sorry if you have seen this already, but try it just the same now, please.

Also, if you will after we try the above suggestion and see no improvement, please post a screenshot of all of your installed programs there. You can use a file hosting site such as imgur.com for that.

1.Which game are you trying to run ?
2.Is this game you purchased from steam or buy from a store or you downloaded cracked game.
Thepzy_™ 20 Mar, 2016 @ 9:45pm
So, I chose TF2, I've played it a lot, and it ran fairly well on my computer before I had the issue. I just updated my drivers to the newest AMD drivers today, and I ran a windows check for updates as well.

Followed the steps you linked, and unfortunately still no results. :/

As for programs: http://imgur.com/a/mxq93

I tried running Garry's Mod and TF2 mostly, and I get all my games from Steam. They worked perfectly fine in the past, it's only been the past few days that I've been unable to play them.

You said you have no programs from the list. That is why I asked for the screenshot.
I see Skype for one and another one that makes me really worried...

What is that "Norton Online Backup" program doing on your computer ?

I ended Skype in task manager, I was sure that's what was meant in the tutorial, I didn't think I'd have to uninstall it. :/ As for my Norton backup manager, that came with my laptop for free. I don't have Norton antivirus though.

As for the one that makes you worried, I'd be glad to know what it is, because as long as it's not something I use I'd be fast to uninstall it.

You said you could not find any that were listed.

So you should have mentioned them, please. I listed the last thing that worried me...Norton. Norton is horrible.

This is my suggestion. Fully uninstall anything and everything to do with Norton. It is toxic anyway and really hates Steam. Fully uninstall anything and everything to do with Skype.

Next, reboot your PC. Now, run the file verification process exactly as in post number 9 above, including running as admin. and do it for Team Fortress 2. Test play the game again.

EDIT..What is that Pokki application for, as I see it is related to Windows 8 in fact ?

http://www.pokki.com/windows-8-start-menu

There are some programs that you have that are not indeed listed on the support page. So if you still have the problem after what was suggested so far, I highly suggest that you perform the steps on the disabling background applications support page, and not simply closing the programs yourself manually ...

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=8043-EUJN-5239

After you do that, be sure to reboot your PC (as Windows should prompt for you to restart anyway if you do it correctly), then perform the steps all over again for the file verification process for TF2, including running as admin, as seen on that page....

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=2037-QEUH-3335

Please make sure you are following the steps in the section for Windows 8 exactly and then continue with what is suggested there....
