Detailed feedback needed on start-up crash and black screen
Hi guys,

While the developer will be looking at other issues posted on the main bug tracking thread, I'd carve out a separate thread to specifically focus on the crash-on-boot and the black-screen hang issue that some of you are experiencing.

Here's what I need:

1) Crash-on-boot or black screen hang?

2) Your config.ini settings. Simply copy/paste settings under [GRAPHICS], [DISPLAY], and [CPU]. Example below:

[GAME] MouseBaseSpeed=2.000000 [GRAPHICS] HDR=DEFAULT AntiAlias=CSAA8X AltAntiAlias=NONE DeferredLightingLight=APPROXIMATE_SPECULAR DeferredLightingHDR=INTEGER_LOG SLI=OFF GodRay=ON Stereo=OFF EffectVolume=HIGH TextureResolution=2 Quality=2 FrameRate=2 TextureDetail=HIGHEST TextureMipLimite=2 [DISPLAY] Resolution=1920x1080 Aspect=DEFAULT RefreshRate=60.00Hz FullScreen=ON VSYNC=OFF [CPU] JobThread=7 RenderingThread=ON

Config.ini can be found in the following directory:
C:\Users\xxxxxxxxxx\AppData\Local\capcom\DEVILMAYCRY4SPECIALEDITION *replace xxxxxxxxxx with your Windows login profile name

3) Monitor resolution and refresh rate used for the game

4) Laptop or desktop PC? If laptop, please provide specific model name

5) Windows version and language (e.g., Windows 8.1 64-bit, U.S. English)

6) Graphics card/chip model and VRAM amount

7) Video driver version

8) A DxDiag report -- a file generated from the DirectX Diagnostics Tool -- will a more provide detailed hardware, software, and driver setup for your PC. Directions on how to generate this file can be found here[www.fuzeqna.com]. You can upload this file to a service such as Dropbox, Google Docs, etc., and link to the file for us to review.

9) Install drive of the operating system, Steam client, and DMC4SE game. If different, please list each separately. (e.g., Windows on C drive, Steam client also on C, but DMC4SE on an external D drive)

Thanks for the info. Have you tried running it on 120Hz mode? How about 60Hz mode? I believe the game engine itself caps out at 120fps, so anything above that might cause issues.

Also, does the game run if you set the in-game FPS settings to 60 FPS MAX? (or FrameRate=1 in the INI setting).

1) First it crashed every time when exiting settings screen or the shop, now can even when starting a mission. One time when loading the game.

2) I can't present the config.ini that i was using when i started experiencing crashes because now it crashes in the settings menu and the settings are not saved. It looked something like this:

[GRAPHICS]
HDR=DEFAULT
AntiAlias=NONE
AltAntiAlias=NONE
DeferredLightingLight=APPROXIMATE_SPECULAR
DeferredLightingHDR=INTEGER_LOG
SLI=OFF
GodRay=ON
Stereo=OFF
EffectVolume=HIGH
TextureResolution=1
Quality=1
FrameRate=2
TextureDetail=HIGHEST
TextureMipLimite=2
[DISPLAY]
Resolution=1920x1080
Aspect=DEFAULT
RefreshRate=60.00Hz
FullScreen=ON
VSYNC=ON
[CPU]
JobThread=3
RenderingThread=ON

Except everything was set to Super High (i don't know what are the numbers for that).

3) 1920 x 1080 60Hz

4) Desktop

5) Windows 8.1 Russian

6) Gigabyte GTX670 2Gb

7) 353.30 (last updated after Batman AK release)

8) https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B4mSrc8iWL2cZ2x2eF9vWUV3Rk0/view?usp=sharing

9) First Windows and Steam were on C and the game was on D (just a partition, not a separate hard drive). Now everything is on C and the problem is still present.

After i deleted the config.ini yesterday and set everything within the game once again it worked fine. I completed Vergil's mission 3 without trouble using shops and everything. But today the crashes are back - when exiting the settings screen, when exiting the shop, when stating the mission. Mostly when exiting the shop - it's a 100% chance crash.

Yes, I have tried on 120Hz and 60Hz because my brother can run it with approximatively the same config in 60Hz without any problem but it does not work for me. :(

1) Crash-on-boot
2) Game exe doesn't get far enough to generate a config.ini, only to generate the folder. Folder is empty.
3) 1920x1080 @ 144hz. Doesn't matter if 60 or 120.
4) Desktop
5) Windows 8.1 64-bit, U.S. English
6) GTX 670 2GB
7) 353.30
8) dxdiag: http://pastebin.com/V1Uqap4F
9) OS: C, Steam: C, DMC4SE: C or D doesn't matter, still crashes.
joablyat 25 Jun, 2015 @ 6:12am
i think the problem comes from nvidia settings or certain graphic cards series, i have seen some people with GTX 670 and GTX 770 have crash issues.

I also tried everything else I read in these forums: Re-installing, verirying game cache, clean re-install of my Drivers, Different compatibility modes etc. However, I cannot cut-paste the game folder in the other drive (Not much space left).

I was having the same problem on win10 and i solved by doing the following:
I simply switched my res from 3840x2160(native) to 1080p and set the scalling to be performed by the display instead of the GPU.
I was able to get into the game afterwards and set it to fullscreen.I then quit,switched back to 2160p got into the game again set it to 2160 and now i can play.

If i turn on DSR(wanted to downsample from 8k lol) the game starts crashing again so don't use that.

posting it here in case it helps anyone

Thanks for the info so far, everyone. We'll parse this information to see if there's any common trend.

The same problem. I was able to fix it.
My computer has two monitors.(Monitor + TV)
They worked in a duplicate mode.
Like this http://www.lcdtvthailand.com/asp-bin/images-source/image/article/PC/PC1.jpg
Just change settings to "Extend these displays"
Like This http://i.stack.imgur.com/9YinR.jpg

And Appcrash is gone and game starts!
Maybe it will help someone else.

^^ This actually worked but in my case I had to change it to duplicate displays since I use extended.

Alternatively, unplugging my second monitor also works and lets me use 144hz
